Michel Simon and Serge Gainsbourg sing l'Herbe tendre
French text:
Vague approximation: Because I lived with my ass in the young grass, because I knew to lie down when I was in love, I managed obscurely, without scandal, keeping my heart gentle during the happy days. Old age must be reached slowly, nothing abused to get that far, no balls-breaking business. Have the wisdom to give some tender kisses under a corner of the blue sky.
It's amazing how difficult it is to translate properly something this simple. Beginning with the tense. In French there's an ambiguity--it could be a description of wisdom applied or of wisdom one has FAILED to apply. English doesn't do past infinitive...
French text:
D'avoir vécu le cul
Dans l'herbe tendre
Et d'avoir su m'étendre
Quand j'étais amoureux
J'aurais vécu obscur
Et sans esclandre
En gardant le coeur tendre
Le long des jours heureux
Pour faire des vieux os
Faut y aller mollo
Pas abuser de rien pour aller loin
Pas se casser le cul
Savoir se fendre
De quelques baisers tendres
Sous un coin de ciel bleu
Pas se casser le cul
Savoir se fendre
De quelques baisers tendres
Sous un coin de ciel bleu.

Sentimental journey, the lead singer killed himself a decade ago (he had very good reasons). He used to be a friend of mine : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTVYWl64M1Q
Again : a Dutch one (but lyrics in English) - hope this one does show across the pond.

No, I never met them. Looks like Tina Weymouth isn't having a good time, doesn't it? Maybe she was just totally concentrated though.

And as an Alice addict I obviously can't miss out on Jefferson Airplane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl89g2SwMh4
By the way, apparently it's Albert Hofmann's birthday today - or yesterday, depending on time zone. Enjoy, but don't get stuck.

Thank you, Lola. I play Wah Wah Ramz on a sunday morning if i have guests around, it gets them out of bed. For gentler guests i use Morning Has Broken.

I'm feeling nostalgic, I guess (both the singer and the woman you see in that video used to be friends of mine):

Le texte est plus que poignant... Je n'aurais pas pu mieux traduire, et pourtant c'est telment simple!

Found again--a lost song by Kurt Weill, previously only remembered by Lotte Lenya:
“Lied vom weissen Käse” (“Song of the White Cheese”), sung by Ute Gfrerer and accompanied by Shane Schag.

Olga Demeter-Charskaya performs her own composition with sister Nina, in the late 1980s when they were around 70-80 years old--but FIERCE!

I am reminded of my grandmother, in her 70s, tangoing imposingly up and down the living room with my little brother while I played Albeniz's Tango in D on the piano.

That brought tears to my eyes. Thanks.

This is wonderful--the entire album of Joseph Kosma's songs issued on Decca in their "Entartete Musik" series (dedicated to the music proscribed by the Nazis as "degenerate"):
The channel is the baritone singer's own:
Kosma : Les Feuilles Mortes
Carco's louche characters poeticized but without sentimentality:
Jésus la Caille - Bonjour Paris
Jésus la Caille est un garçon
qu'on prend souvent pour une fille
qu'on prend souvent pour une fille.
On dit de lui: Qu'elle est gentille!
Qu'il a du charme à sa façon!
Filles, garçons vont bien ensemble
ce qui manque à l'un, l'autre l'a.
Jesus-la-Caille is a boy who's often taken for a girl... they say of him: How cute is she! He's charming in a way... Girls, boys go together well, what one lacks the other has...

What up, Millie?
>57 MyopicBookworm:
Ha, really? Aww... here's my quick 'n' dirty translation:
It'll be all right again
Even if it doesn't seem so
These past times have been very
Difficult
It'll be all right again
The pain will subside
And you will see
It'll be all right again
It'll be all right again
Everything tanked
Massively
It was, honestly,
The bottom
Sometimes we're up and sometimes down
Take it as it comes
In life as in long distance running
Don't give up
repeat 1 & 2nd
What up, Millie?
