Hello,

I've just discovered Persephone and over the last couple of months I've read Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day, The Making of a Marchioness, and Mariana (I could have read them in a day but I rationed myself!).

Out of the list, The Shuttle immediately appeals. I have been unwell recently, so I'd like to stick to the gentler novels, I think. I'll keep the social commentaries for when I'm feeling a little less delicate.

Any ideas?

I can certainly recommend The Shuttle, which I enjoyed immensely.
On another note, I hope you feel better soon.

I enjoyed The Shuttle very much. Bettina is a wonderful, strong heroine. I can also recommend The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. I don't have it in a Persephone edition, wish I did!

Oh, yes, get well soon.

I'm not usually one for short stories, but I can thoroughly recommend 'Tea with Mr Rochester' by Frances Towers. She has a wonderful turn of phrase and makes you feel as though you are always 'in' on the story.

Also, I have just finished 'The Carlyles at Home' by Thea Holme. Whilst not fiction, it is a riveting read and so humorous in places, perhaps unintentionally. It has made me want to read more of the Carlyles' correspondence. Most certainly a good read whilst recuperating.

Did anyone attend the Persephone Tea in New York in April, and if so did you enjoy it? I attended and there was talk of getting a Persephone reading group up and running in NYC. If anyone is interested please let me know.

Yes, Louise, I was at the Persephone tea, along with fellow LThingers bleuroses and suge. I really had a good time. Did you?
I remember a couple of ladies talking about a reading group in NYC. Were you one of those?

Marise's recommendation, The Home-Maker, is one of my favorite novels ever. It does, however, make some serious social commentary, and has some wrenching aspects. For something gentle and summer-like that will transport you to the healthy air of an English seaside resort in the first half of the last century, I recommend R.C. Sherriff's The Fortnight in September.

Hi Paola

I had a great time at the Persephone tea, and I was hoping that a non-virtual reading group might emerge. I put my name on a list that was circulating with some vague mention that someone would contact me by email but I haven't heard anything. However, now that I have discovered the Persephone group on LT it is a consolation ;)

If anyone fancies an informal meet up in Manhattan to chat about Persephone titles over a coffee/tea let me know.

Louise

I just finished The Fortnight in September, so I'd like to add my support for that one! It's the perfect read for this time of the year (if only it would stop raining). One of my other favourite novels ever is The Far Cry (touchstone not working) by Emma Smith.

Wonderful. Thank you! I shall mull over the suggestions and put my next order in. :)

I can also recommend The Children Who Lived in a Barn as a quick, light read. In the best tradition of competent children coping without their parents!

Greenery Street is a good light novel, and ideal when concentration is not at its best. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I would recommend

Greenery Street
The Village (OK, it's social commentary in a way but it's a wonderful, absorbing story)
A Fortnight in September

Get well soon and enjoy your Persephone treat!
