Try to guess Crambo's word that rhymes with "bean."

Trying to guess the new word
I fluff myself up like a bird
My feathers are nice
And unplagued with lice
I'm so much ahead of the herd

In this novel by Lowry, it's clear he's
Describing himself, per most theories.
But if Griffin had written
This book, it would fit in
His own uber-leatherneck series.

//Howdy, Tid! It's great to see someone else writing limericks. Rodney's an excellent limerick writer too, though I sense he has something else up his sleeve for this round.//

//you're welcome buck! I got the inspiration from Rodney, but can't guarantee a limerick every time..//

#2 My new Speckled Sussex is Dotty
She cackles but she's no Pavarotti,
'Tho frequently seen
To peck and to preen
We've no rooster to see she's a hotty!

#3 ... and try to glean my angle?

#4 I'd like to be under the sea
What joy for you and for me
Neither ultra nor sub-
marine, there's the rub,
is the word that I think that you mean.

// Apologies to the Beatles!

#5 I'm a bit iffy about this, but wonder if you mean 'serpentine'. If not, hit me with a hint!

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine

Alpha not: glean, marine, preen, serpentine, submarine, ultramarine

8Citizenjoyce

Yup, it was serpentine.

9Tid
Ott 30, 2012, 2:15 pm

But serpentine rhymes with "mine", not "bean" !

However, given that London's Hyde Park has a fine Serpentine (!), I love the light reflecting off it on a sunny day..

#9 With Crambo there's the occasional "you say tomato, I say potato" situation, but I tend to let it go through to the keeper. I don't want to take the sheen off the fun.

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen

Alpha not: glean, marine, preen, serpentine, sheen, submarine, ultramarine

#11 Three days or more without a guess - I'm not being mean!

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean

Well, I think you're downright disgusting and should be censored.

#13 Unequal as I am to the task of being a good Crambo, I don't think think that I've ever been obscene!

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene

Alpha not: glean, marine, mean, obscene, preen, serpentine, sheen, submarine, ultramarine

I'm becoming red-faced with anger that I'm no nearer to getting this.

#15 I've looked at this from a couple of sides now, but all I'm getting is carmine (which doesn't really rhyme), or chagrin (which may for some speakers), or sanguine (which doesn't quite rhyme, and has cheerful rather than irate connotations). I think I need a bit of a hint. None of these are Crambo's word, by the way.

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene, carmine, chagrin, sanguine

Alpha not: carmine, chagrin, glean, marine, mean, obscene, preen, sanguine, serpentine, sheen, submarine, ultramarine

#17 It's OK Lou, I'm not detecting spleen!

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene, carmine, chagrin, sanguine, spleen

Alpha not: carmine, chagrin, glean, marine, mean, obscene, preen, sanguine, serpentine, sheen, spleen, submarine, ultramarine

// Crambo's word is an adjective. In honour of the upcoming Presidential election I've planted some subliminal clues in in my responses.

My guess was 'spleen' too! (Red-faced with anger, venting my spleen...)

My anger has turned to jealousy.

When the election is over you just know the pundits will state that the results could have been predicted.

21rodneyvc

#19 Thanks Tid - my mental picture of spleen is grumpy rather than apoplectic! The Incredible Hulk turns green when aroused - maybe he's jealous too!

#20 You should have foreseen that this isn't Crambo's word.

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene, carmine, chagrin, sanguine, spleen, green, foreseen
Alpha not: carmine, chagrin, foreseen, glean, green, marine, mean, obscene, preen, sanguine, serpentine, sheen, spleen, submarine, ultramarine

// Two syllables. Geometry

22Tid
Nov 5, 2012, 5:55 pm

I would guess a word that starts with a syllable meaning "joint, with, or accompanying" and a second syllable that takes the form of a wave. (I'd make a more geometrical guess but I have totally forgotten what it actually is..!)

The problem is that on our side of the pond, that particular geometrical function rhymes with 'line' not with 'bean'. However this may simply be a tomehto/tomahto thing. Or I may be barking up the wrong triangle.

#22 Even in the antipodes cosine rhymes with line. Not Crambo's word, although your angular image is very close.

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene, carmine, chagrin, sanguine, spleen, green, foreseen, cosine
Alpha not: carmine, chagrin, cosine, foreseen, glean, green, marine, mean, obscene, preen, sanguine, serpentine, sheen, spleen, submarine, ultramarine

#24 A very tasty suggestion. I've always thought that the mangosteen and the lychee have similar tastes, but very different external appearance.

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene, carmine, chagrin, sanguine, spleen, green, foreseen, cosine, mangosteen

Even before I ever dreamed of being a __ __ __ __, I took a dislike to W. Storrs Leeʻs title:
God Bless Our Queer old
__ __ __ __
; also to the line
in the conserv C & W song
"An Okie from Muskogee" (ca. 1968) to the effect that "we still respect" (not the faculty) but "the college __ __ __ __".

#26 Oh, those spoonerisms could lead to obscenity! Not dean.
#27 Congratulations Tid, Crambo's word is indeed scalene - a triangle with three unequal sides. Over to you.

The subliminal words in my previous responses were: (1)Try (7)angle (10)with (12)three (14)unequal (16)sides.

Not: preen, glean, ultramarine, submarine, marine, serpentine, sheen, mean, obscene, carmine, chagrin, sanguine, spleen, green, foreseen, cosine, mangosteen, dean
Alpha not: carmine, chagrin, cosine, dean, foreseen, glean, green, mangosteen, marine, mean, obscene, preen, sanguine, serpentine, sheen, spleen, submarine, ultramarine
Indeed: scalene

There was a race of significance in the antipodes today, won by a creature named "Green Moon". I don't know what this may portend for our friends over the pond.

Wow! My first Crambo win :-)

I suppose I should start in a new topic, but I don't see the " Continue topic in a new thread" at the bottom of this one? I've never started a new topic, believe it or not! I'm going out for the day, so I'll see your reply later.

Hit the "Crambo!" link at the top of this thread, and then the "Post a new topic" link just above the list of topics.
