I can't do clever clues, so Crambo's word rhymes with "car".

My son's dog ate the leg of his new table. Don't you hate it when something happens to disrupt beauty?

I hope that didn't make it a stool! That would mar the decor!

To keep it literary, I'll quote

". . .A phantom ship with each mast and __ __ __ __

Across the moon , like a prison bar."

Some people like to grill meat because they get a lovely flavor from the blackened part. (It doesn't work quite so well with tofu.)

#14 Lawyers can spend many years at the bar, and often many more in them! However, it rarely makes them as petite as ballet dancers!

#15 I'm afraid, Roland, that you are far from the answer, although, despite Crambo's word not being the name of any particular person, Joe Loius, Henry Longfellow, Woodrow Wilson, and even Paul Revere are all strangely relevant.

Perhaps it doesn't end in -ar after all,
(Since Louis,Longfellow, et al.
Are "Strangely relevant"? Could it end in -A?

(In my dialect an unspelled R has a way
Of attaching itself, to a fin-
-al vowel, so (if the pronunciation were mine),
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
could be the one!)
Which would lead to no end of fun.
With the R not spelt out but said;
Or to bad English have I you led?

19rodneyvc
Ott 16, 2012, 12:24 am

#17 That's peculiar, but its not Crambo's word, although being peculiar is relevant in a way.

#18 Sometimes I pick a rhyming word where the ending has a different spelling, however not this time. My dictionary has about 1500 9-letter words ending in 'a', and there are many excellent prospective Crambo words among them. I'll volunteer 'guerrilla', but I'm afraid, Roland, that I'll need more of a hint from you.

Not: mar, spar, jar, char, antimacassar, circular, bar, far, peculiar, guerilla

Hint on 18:

A large expensive set of

#20 I used to think that having a set of Encyclopedia Britannica would be cool, however, as you suggest, I suspect that I would never actually use them. The EB contains many of Crambo's word.

My guess can be (Renaissance) Latin, English, or Spanish. (In this case U. S. English.)

Yes, Americana! One thing I miss about it is that it had
a good map of each of the 50

#24 Was there a suggestion in there Roland?

#25 You've educated me, Jenni, but I'm afraid that Crambo's word is not alveolar. Crambo's word is a noun, not an adjective.

#26 I'll have to think harder about that one!

"GOd is a long way up,

Ts__ __ (the Russian) is
an alternate spelling

#33 Crambo's word is neither tsar nor czar. Alexander II of Russia might fit into the list above, Nicholas II arguably wouldn't.

Crambo's word has literally a couple more syllables than 1, and literally a couple less than 5. Crambo's word starts with a vowel.

Just saw. in Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. a mention of a WW II
"__. __. __. Man". Strictly speaking, that's not a "Word" but the initials of 3 words. But the rhyme seems to be okay.
It's even kind of literary:The 1st "word" is the initial
of something having the same name as a famous Victorian poet.
I think "The __ __ __*
Man" is also the title of a
RIchard Yates short story.

*I put in the periods, above, just to show that it is 3 initials, not because the
literary writers did.

#41 Roland, do I still owe you a guess?

#42, 42 Hi Tid, welcome to Crambo! Anyone who plays Crambo is a star, but I'm afraid that's not Crambo's word. Although anyone, or anything that is Crambo's word is arguably a star in their field. I'll also rule out quasar and pulsar.

The "Alpha not" is the list of unsuccessful guesses in alphabetical order to make it easier to spot if a word you are thinking of suggesting has already been suggested. I use the "Not" list for excluded words in chronological order for people to see what I though the word was that they were proposing - sometimes we get it wrong.

Not: mar, spar, jar, char, antimacassar, circular, bar, far, peculiar, guerilla, encyclopedia, britannica, americana, alveolar, bizarre, bazaar, par, tsar, czar, avatar, gar, star, quasar, pulsar.
