Louise Penny's books have sparked an interest in things Quebecois (provide own acute accents), and I'd like to know if anyone has, and/or can recommend, any cookbooks from there.

Martin Picard's Au Pied de Cochon: the Album is probably the best, if not the most exuberant.

The greatest things Quebec makes are Montreal bagels and the smoked meat from Schwartz's, which you should just wait to have when you take a trip to Montreal. There's a Quebecois seafood restaurant in New York City, and the only Quebec items they have in their menu are poutine, sugar pie and smoked meat. I would just check out recipes for those items on the internet.

Many thanks Ortolan.... 'poutine'? 'sugar pie and smoked meat' (is that one dish or two? That question is rhetorical....) I'm off to check the recipes on the net, as you suggest.

I have just discovered the recipe for 'poutine'. Perhaps you have to be Quebecoise?

I think they have something similar in New Orleans.

Poutine has in recent years been discovered by restaurant-owners in Pittsburgh.... me, I think I'll stick to chili cheese fries.
