It's time for even more musical diversity, folks. What lyrical gems are scattered about our teeny, tiny planet?

I'll start with an uplifting Chutney ditty from Rakesh,

The Black Door

It's closed already with three padlocks
and riveted the black door
because your parents are jealous
and are afraid that I love you

They must think that being enclosed
will make you stop loving me soon
but not even the door or one hundred padlocks will
be able stop me

But the door is not responsable
that inside you are crying
you love me and I love you
the black door is superfluous

Ask your father and mother
if they ever enjoyed love
if they loved each other was the door
the black door also closed for them

But the door is not responsable
that inside you are crying
you love me and I love you
the black door is superfluous

Mercedes Sosa y Maria Graña

Nada

I've made it to your house ...
I do not know how I was able
They told me you are not there,
That you'll never come back again ..
They told me that you're gone!
So much snow on my soul!
Such silence at your door!
Upon reaching the threshold,
A lock made of pain
Stopped my heart

Nothing, nothing is left of the house where your were born...
Only the yuyal weaving cobwebs.
The rose bush no longer exists
It surely died when you left.
Everything weighs like a cross!
Nothing, nothing but sadness and stillness...
No one to tell me if you still live.
Where are you... that I can tell you
That today I've come back repentant
looking for your love.

Now I'm leaving your house
and I don't even know where I'm going ...
Without wanting to I say goodbye
And even the echo of your voice
Out of nowhere replies to me.
In your lock's cross
For your pity I have prayed ...
And in your gate trickled
A tear turned into flower
coming from my poor heart

Nothing, nothing is left of the house where your were born...
Only the yuyal weaving cobwebs.
The rose bush no longer exists
It surely died when you left.
Everything weighs like a cross!
Nothing, nothing but sadness and stillness...
No one to tell me if you still live.
Where are you... that I can tell you
That today I've come back repentant
looking for your love.

ARISA 21.4 LIAT BANAY LIVE!

I, for one, find it wonderfully refreshing to see such a different view of Israel - one that's gay, uncloseted and joyous. The light touch and sense of humor in the video are marvelous - no one in it takes themselves at all seriously.

Here is Portland's own wonderful band, Pink Martini, playing a great old Egyptian song "Bokra wa ba'adu" (which means "tomorrow and the day after")

The bandleader, Thomas Lauderdale, is a personal friend and went to school with me and my sister. He is a pianist. The singer is China Forbes, who is able to sing lots of different languages by learning them totally phonetically.

The song is from an old Egyptian movie and was originally sung by great Egyptian crooner/actor Abdel Halim Hafez. I could not find an original on YouTube, unfortunately, but the Pink Martini version was pretty much like the original except for of course the singer's voice.
