I read in Otaku USA magazine, that Shonen Jump USA is going to be stopping printing their most popular mangas (Naruto,Bleach, etc) and only publish them digitally.
If that is correct how do you guys feel about that. I have mixed feelings about it myself. On one hand, it is a good thing because stores can only dedicate so much bookshelf space for the Shonen Jump titles without not having room for the other titles. But on the other hand, I feel that now since those books are now going to be only in a digital format I feel no pressure to get them. They will always available to download versus a book that might be bought after you put it down.

As I understood it, it's only Shonen Jump the MAGAZINE that is going all-digital, much like Yen+ already did. The compiled forms of the titles shouldn't be.

ETA: Unless the article was referring to the fact that Viz has *sped up* the digital releases of certain titles, to catch up with the Japanese versions. The print versions are *behind* the digital ones, but Viz's press releases have all said things like "print edition forthcoming" and that the digital versions are being released "ahead of the print edition," not "instead of."

You might be right, I might have misunderstood the article and got a little confused about whats going all digital and whats not. I guess since we live in an age where you can get both a printed and digital copy of manga, things are going to get confusing of whats being offered in what format.

I prefer to read manga online or order it from my library and only when I love it and want to read it again do I go out and buy the series. Bleach is one of these series I'm saving up to buy. I don't mind reading digitally but I prefer having the book in my hand.

I like the availability of digital titles, because it's generally cheaper and encourages more people to try the title out...

But personally, I hate reading digital. I like being able to flip through pages and "have" a book in my hand. Being able to recall a scene and just flip through a book to find it is something I really like about physical books. I don't mind paying extra to have that~

I would like it if Viz and Yen and the other publishers would have an e-reader edition. I think there's an IPad app for manga, but I'm not sure how official or legal it is. If anyone knows more specifics about this, I'd love to learn!

Yen does have an app (which you can use on regular computers, too) for their Yen+ magazine, which lets you read 2 months worth of digital manga chapters at a time. It's not quite the same, but there it is.
