Welcome to the bright, shiny, magpie-attractant twelfth iteration of the Discworld quote game!
And now the quote to start us off:

“And it doesn’t occur to you that they might be part of some clever plan?”

As a Forexian, I distinctly remember reading that and hoping that Pterry would write more about this fabled hidden continent, and of course in The Last Continent he did just that.

Where did I read it though? I don't think it was in the first few books because by that time I was already hooked and really knew I wanted to see what his treatment of Australia would be.

So, middling early... My guess is Mort.

The misquote comes from a poem by Andrew Marvell, called "To His Coy Mistress", and the proper lines are:

The grave's a find and private place
But none, I think, do there embrace.

it goes on -

Thus therefore whilst the youthful dew
Sits on thy cheek like morning dew

At every pour with instant fires ... etc.

Know the original source, but not which Pratchett it comes from!
And poetry doesn’t fare too well on the Discworld. Hmm. Are we being too literal, going down the vampires route? Do we need to think more … romantically? The mad Seraph who kept wanting to be told stories? Sourcery?

184Orangez
Ott 24, 2011, 3:19 pm

Nice!

An easy one to get this going again:

"REMIND ME AGAIN, he said, HOW THE LITTLE HORSE-SHAPED ONES MOVE."

185ronincats

How about Reaper Man?

195pinkozcat
Ott 29, 2011, 5:03 am

Ah, Orangez, now I see why you said that it was easy; the clue was in the quote itself. :)

Here is a random quote from a random book. It is not so easy:

The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to those who think they've found it.

196pwaites
Ott 29, 2011, 8:51 am

Not so easy... Oh, well. I'll go ahead and guess the easy one. The Truth?

197pinkozcat
Ott 29, 2011, 9:26 am

No - sorry, not The Truth.

I think OliverC (welcome to the game!) may have it …

207pinkozcat

Yes, Oliver has it. Monstrous Regiment is the correct book.

Over to you, Oliver.

Try this one

"...., the master of the music, had described **********'s voice as putting him in mind of a disappointed vulture arriving too late at the dead donkey."

From the first Discworld novel that I read.
