Where did you get the idea for your books?

I'm looking forward to Sisterhood Everlasting, and to hearing what you have to say here!

In your books, you are able to describe such strong friendships -- Did you have those types of friendships growing up?

I'm so glad that you decided to write another sisterhood book I Love them, i can say that the second movie i was really disapointed in how they mixed everything up. but i still enjoyed it because i read the books

I've really enjoyed getting to know Lena, Carmen, Bee, and Tibby. Are you planning to write another book featuring Ama, Polly, and Jo?

i began to love carmen, lena, bee, and tibby by the end of the first one. what was your inspiration for these 4 beautiful girls? was it hard to see a movie, or did they do it right?

this series was perfect for sharing with my then 13 yr old and sparking lots of conversations. I would love to know how these girls mature into mothers to their own children.

The idea of a pair of jeans that would look great on any body type is an intriguing one, especially since I have a pair of pants that look great whether I'm extra heavy, or post-diet thin.
Did the idea for the traveling pants come from experience with a personal article of clothing?
Have you ever had a piece of clothing that you didn't want to wash?
Finally, do you identify with one of the girls more than the others? If so, whom and why?

Can you tell us if you considered any other, um, plot device(?) besides a pair of jeans to explore friendships/tie the girls' summer stories together? Say boot camp (or boots) or a stray dog, a car or a house? Or are you saving that idea for another series? Thanks.

Though I never admitted to it in public--and actually hid it behind my algebra textbook--I'm a big fan.

:D

I get my ideas from all kinds of places--loved ones, books, songs, memories and sometimes just from the blue. The idea for the traveling pants was sparked by a friend who'd shared a pair of jeans with some girlfriends over the course of a summer.

Thanks! I'm so glad. I really hope you'll enjoy the book.

I did have a strong group of friends growing up--and I'm still close to most of them now. So I do draw from my own experience. But my group wasn't quite as constant and cohesive as the sisterhood. I would say the sisterhood is two parts experience and one part fantasy.

Thanks! I'm glad you are glad.
I think the second movie had some really bright spots, but I agree that combining three books into one made the plot harder to follow than in the first movie.

RWListen,
I never like to let characters go. I have a bunch of thoughts about Ama, Polly, and Jo. I'd love to come back to them at some point, but I don't have plans to at the moment.

Sarahy,
I am happy to hear you connected to the girls of the sisterhood. Each one began with her own inspiration--and each one of them has come a long way since she began. Carmen started with her visit to her absent father. I imagined her as a girl who'd been disappointed but was still carrying big expectations. Lena was first inspired by the myth of Artemis, and Tibby was vaguely inspired by the movie "It's a Wonderful Life." Bridget began as my attempt to write a fearless and carefree girl, but it turns out nobody is fearless or carefree when you truly get to know them.

Pammypam,
It makes me happy to hear that! I hope you will enjoy Sisterhood Everlasting. Girls maturing into mothers is just the territory I've covered--or at least part of the territory.

Speaking of motherhood, I've got a baby crying upstairs, so i better run. Thank you all for your questions and thoughts. I'll be back soon.

Loved reading the sisterhood in my teens. Now that I am older I am so excited for the new book with the sisterhood all grown up. Obviously don't know how the new book ends, but will you continue the story of the sisterhood in their adult lives for some more books? Can't wait to read Sisterhood Everlasting!!

I thought they could have done so much more with the other three books instead of trying to put everything into one movie there was so much that got changed from the books, that is the part that made me sad because the books bring so much more to the issues and emotions that the girls went through. you Have an amazing way of writing that just brings a person into the books and gets them hooked.

JRlibrary,
I agree that an article of clothing--especially a pair of pants--that makes you feel good in all your moods and phases feels almost magical. I do get weirdly attached to those kinds of things. I shared my wedding dress with my three sisters in law and my childhood friend. That experience definitely provided inspiration for my writing. I am a fan of washing in most cases, though smell is such a powerful sense, especially left in clothing. I once had a shirt left by a boyfriend that I never wanted to wash.
I identify strongly with each character as I'm writing her, but I probably have more in common with Carmen than I do with Bee, for example.

Destinyhascheatedme,
I am honored you hid my book in your textbook. I like to think my stories are more engrossing than algebra. (I admit I was not very talented at algebra.)
I didn't really consider any other object to tie the girls together--jeans just felt right and I love the word 'pants.' But I do like your suggestions!

mebwilso,
I am so glad you enjoyed the sisterhood. I hope you'll like the new book too. :)
When I started writing Sisterhood Everlasting, I thought that might be it, but when I got to the end, I really liked the place I left them. I hated to leave them, to tell you the truth. I started having all kinds of ideas about what might happen next. So I guess I'll keep the door open to another book.

Thank you for writing the Sisterhood books. I enjoyed reading them, #1 actually being my favorite, and I especially enjoyed seeing that movie with my mom - she doesn't always read/see the same kinds of things I do, but we both laughed and cried together.
