I've been listening to audiobooks for a few years now, and have mainly used two Creative mp3 players (still using the Muvo), which have worked very well for me. I've also used my iPod Touch and Android phone for a few audios I got from Librivox.

I'd like to get an mp3 player for my mother-in-law. She enjoys reading, but I don't think she's ever listened to audiobooks. I listened to the audio of The Help this past winter and thought she'd really enjoy it, so it's been in the back of my mind since then to get her a player. I'm looking for advice and suggestions for an mp3 player that would be user-friendly, especially for someone who is not very comfortable with technology. Also, our library uses Overdrive for downloading audiobooks.

While I got the hang of my Creative players very quickly and have loved having them, several features make me think they wouldn't be right for my mother-in-law: tiny screen, potentially confusing folder options, and the need to have "just the right touch" to fast-forward or rewind. Basically, it should have fairly intuitive and decent-sized controls, plus decent-sized screen and text.

Other thoughts: I'd like to avoid iPods. A built-in FM radio would be a good bonus. I was looking at the Sansa Fuze (I think that's how it's spelled?) and Clip, but haven't actually tried them. I haven't seen other Creative players lately, though they might have one or more devices that would fit the bill. I'm not concerned about downloading to the PC and transferring to the device, as I can do those things for her; just the basic functions and switching between files need to be easy.

Thanks in advance for any assistance! :-)

I have both a Sansa and a wonderful Bluetooth Best Buy mp3 which they sadly don't sell anymore) and both are great for Overdrive books.
I have no patience for technology and find both easy to use.

The one nice thing about the Sansa is that the books you download on Overdrive are only licenced for 21 days but the player doesn't recognize that. I have books I transfered to it last year that I could still listen to. (I've been too lazy to remove them until now when I finally have run out of room.)

I like the Clip+ for myself, but I fear your mother-in-law would likely find the experience frustrating. I've never used a Fuze, but for screen size alone I think that'd be much easier for her to handle.

I agree with Seajack that the Clip works well, but probably isn't for your mil. The screen is small and you said small is not good.

My brother-in-law has a Fuze (is that the spelling?) and I haven't used it, but it's not small and the quality should be good.

I will warn you that on the clip (and therefore probably the Fuze), the books I buy from audible go to the "audiobooks" part of the player but the books I download from the library (ours uses overdrive, too) stay in the music section. Just so you know where to look for the books.

The trick with library books to Sansa clip (and Fuze, too, I'd think) is to download the book to your hard drive. Then go to Documents --> My Media --> open the file for your book --> individually select (check off) all of the parts of the book (but not the cover art files, etc.) --> at the bottom of the screen change the tagging (from fiction, mystery or whatever) to "audiobook" and then *THIS IS IMPORTANT* hit "Save" over to the right. This saves one's place if exiting the file (voluntarily or not) - when going back there'll be a choice of "Resume at same point?" to get back where the book left off.

As far as where Overdrive sends the books on the device, Music is the default location, but can be over-ridden by clicking the Advanced feature button at Overdrive Manager, which allows you to browse the device's folders (Music, Audiobooks, Podcasts, etc.) or create your own. I believe if you skip the above tagging (leaving the existing history, mystery, etc. in place), but tell Overdrive specifically to send the book to "audiobooks", you'll also get the "Resume at the same point?" option also.

Why thank you, Seajack! I'll have to get on my mom's and kid's computers and fix the set-up! I spend as little time as possible on the Windows computers in the house - I have two Macs and much prefer those, mostly b/c engineering husband has always insisted on Macs. The Windows computers are for the people in the house who don't pay the bills LOL.

I should've added that the above steps are before transferring to the player - I'm so used to editing the tagging automatically I forgot to say that!

I keep some stories and podcasts on my Clip+ so I really need the tagging to go back to my (non-Audible) book later.

Thank you for the suggestions as well as the great tips! If I get a Fuze (which sounds like the best option so far), I'll be a couple steps ahead of the game, thanks to your advice. :-)

It's funny how the different players and brands have certain quirks. When I first got my Creative Muvo (after already using a Zen Nano Plus, I think it was), and transferred an audiobook CD from my computer, it ended up with a "playlist" where I heard track 1 of the first CD, and then track 1 of the *second* CD, and I thought, "Wait, did I miss something?!?" So, I've had a lot of practice shuffling tracks on the computer, choosing which folder to use on the player, all that *fun stuff*! ;-)

Thank you all again for the ideas and information, and happy listening!

5/6/7: I can verify with the Sansa Clip+, if you just change the location from "Music" to "Audiobooks" during the Transfer To Device, the resume feature works great.
