This was our selection for May's Group Read when we had our last poll. I'm about half way through. This is one I find I cannot put down. In about another week we will start a poll for Group Read June and July. Happy reading! :^)

I have this book ready to go. My May is complicated with many family events, but I definitely wanted to read this one with a group. Thanks for setting up the thread.

I borrowed this book today from the library. I have only read one other Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude, which wasn't my cup of tea. I remember enjoying his writing style but not liking the magical realism throughout the book. That was about 10 years ago, so I'm keen to try Marquez again.

Social, although I obviously do not know your tastes in reading, I think you will find "Love" a better read. Same style, but no magical realism. Very down to earth, with emotional bursts. Almost Hemmingway style but more colorful.

I read this book in 2008. Because I was working and studying at the same time it took me two months to read and by the end as it had been carted around in my book bag and out in all weathers so the copy became quite tattered. I enjoyed reading the book at the time but looking back on the story... not so much. I haven't seen the movie would anyone recommend it?

I finished it. What a wonderful book. I could have done with a little less of the sleeping around, but other than that, I thought it was a great story.

what do you mean a little less of the sleeping around? That is obviously what "love" is to Garcia Marquez!

I didn't like Florentino's sleeping round with the young schoolgirl who has been placed in his care. That was abuse not love. However, I loved his devotion and loyalty to Fermina over the many years when lesser men would have given up. Florentino had no trouble separating physical love from romantic love so if his body wasn't faithful his heart was. I felt the book rambled and digressed a bit too much for me - characters came and went with such rapidity that I had trouble remembering them.

I found Love a better read than 100 Years of Solitude but ultimately it was only a 3 star read for me. Still I'm glad I read it, so thank you to this group for the encouragement to give Marquez another try.

It is a while since I read the book, I must admit I felt it was rather weak in comparison to some of his other books. I recently read The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor, one of his early books, which I thought was very good. I think I still prefer 100 years of Solitude though.

Re 6 As for the film, it is pretty dreadful, the dialogue is painful, which is a pity. Some how they lost Marquez's beautiful turn of phrase and came out with a soap opers.

I read Love in the Time of Cholera back in 2003 and I remember savouring it for a big part of the summer. I really enjoyed it--but now that I think about it, I can't tell you anything about the book. So memorable in my enjoyment of it, but not memorable in any details.

I am still reading this book. I am over halfway through but just barely. I really am enjoying the read, though. I have just been out of town a lot. It is amazing to me that someone could hold onto this feeling for one person for such a long, long time.

#9> I agree about the part with America Vicuna. I thought he treated her horribly.

Otherwise, though, I really thought this book was a terrific read, and I especially liked the ending.

9: Couldn't agree more with your points! Well stated!

It was a good book, but I too had a hard time with characters coming and going. But all in all, I'm happy with it :)
