From the NY Times: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/26/columbia-professors-retirement-is-b...

Frankly, I can't imagine working until you are 88! I'm a quarter-century younger, and planning on retiring shortly. Kudos to him.

Wow, yes. Served above and beyond the call of duty! I probably own more books authored and co-authored by him than by any other scholar.

Excellent article for an excellent man. I appreciate his dedication to translating the Japanese language and inspiring others like myself to continue my passion with Japan and its language.

I hope he enjoys his retirement, although, selfishly, I hope that he will still grace readers (if not students) with his wisdom regarding Japanese literature and culture. Regardless of whether he does so or not, he will remain an inspiration and influence to scholars for many decades to come.

Although he's planning to retire from the university and move to Japan, he's still planning to write at least two more works. See this interview with the Yomuiuri: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20110423dy02.htm
