I know someone here has mentioned that Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is to be made into a film, but filming is also planned for Cheerful Weather for the Wedding! It's one of my absolute favourites, so I'm really pleased. It's set to star Emily Blunt and David Tennant. Not sure about the casting, but I'll keep an open mind.

That's good news. I also like Cheerful Weather for the Wedding.

Thanks for posting the trailer link, bleuroses. I'm a bit unsure ... it's not exactly as I pictured it when I read the book. But then it never is. I'm still dying to see it, but I hope it lives up to my expectations!

I feel the same hesitancy, miss_read. As much as I like Frances McDormand, she wouldn't have been my first choice for the part. Still, as I am queen of suspended truths, I look forward to seeing the film.

Well?

Has anyone seen it? I saw it last week. It's not particularly faithful to the book (from what I can remember), but it does capture the spirit of the world according to LaFosse. However, it was an hour and half of glamorous eye candy in a dress down universe, and made me want to head straight for a party and consume an enormous cocktail ;)

I have seen the trailer and realized it is NOT faithful to the book. In spite of that, I want to go see it.
I promise I will not grumble too much when I am in the movie theatre!

Not yet and darn at such luck. It's playing 50 miles from home and my schedule just hasn't allowed such a jaunt! I ordered it from Amazon and hope it arrives today!!

I saw it. It's not faithful to the book and I don't see that the changes are really an improvement. But, it was still a charming and enjoyable film - just try to take it on its own terms and not keep thinking 'Well that's not right!'

The friend I was with thoroughly enjoyed it, and is now enjoying the book even more.

I've just come back from Lisbon where I was really surprised to see Miss Pettigrew playing in a mulitplex. I can't begin to describe how excited I was as I haven't seen any adverts for it in London.

I haven't read the book yet so can't compare, but as others have said it was an enjoyable film that made me want my very own Miss Pettigrew to come along and sort out my life!

Rereading the Winter 2006-07 Quarterly, it mentioned a viewing of They Were Sisters. Here's the info from IMDB:

They Were Sisters.

It's on VHS but not readily available although amazon.uk has a few used copies starting at £83.49!

The following is from Female Celebrity Smoking Lists about Vera Sargeant (played by Anne Crawford)

"A cigarette hangs from her lips and waggles slightly as she speaks while holding a skein of wool for her sister to wind into a ball. Job completed, she takes a drag, inhaling just briefly before blowing the smoke away."

I also found a collection of photo stills on ebay!
