This really isn't a very welcoming thread. I don't understand the presumption that everyone on the internet is sitting behind his or her computer in the buff. Oh sure... I have no doubt that many of the regulars in the Salon actually do post in the all together, but geez Louise, it's just too much information for a "Welcome" thread. How 'bout a little decorum? How 'bout a little tolerance for Fully Clothed Posters? How 'bout a new Welcome Thread that doesn't make haberdasherial judgments?

Looking back, I see that the first post reads "Welcome, New Salonistas," and not "Welcome, Nude Salonistas."

Everyone knows Louise. Some of us knew him before he added that "e" to his name.

Just to let everyone know. Two new little doelings have arrived at the east Tennessee dacha--Gabrielle and Giselle (both three weeks old). Giselle looks like Michael Jackson in the last stages of his Diana Ross incarnation--before his nose fell off and all that. Gabrielle is a beauty as well and quite stubborn. I would post pictures but Giselle and Gabby say they don't feel comfortable posing in the buff. They're not those kind of goats.

And baswood-welcome. But I would think Bordeaux, wine, and big books just naturally go together. I feel rather embarrassed that one of our new salonistas openly admits to leaving big books at home when traveling to Bordeaux. If you were visiting to east Tennessee, I could understand your reluctance. Carrying around any big book other than THE BOOK can get one lynched. That's why I shacked up with the wicked but seductive Baron von Kindle. He's svelte and no one knows the size of his book.

And thanks for the invitation. I have already done my service with Moby Dick. I wrote papers on it at least three times as an undergraduate. (Got A's on them, too.) After I finished college, I noticed the book on my shelf one day and said--hey, maybe it's time I actually read that thing. So I did. It turned out to be a really good book.

I was too much of a lit'ry snob ever to use Cliff Notes, so I had winged it through the papers. That's a skill that's stood by me ever since.

Hello. My name is Katy. I've just joined LT, and this is the first group I've checked out. You look like an interesting bunch.

I grew up in a trailer park, and speak with a southern accent. I attended a public university and am not very well read. I follow book lists compiled by people who attended highly-regarded universities. My hope is to learn to more convincingly ape my betters.

I recently read Moby Dick for another book club run by a comedian. I thought it was 500 pages of blubber culminating in a whirlpool of violence, but that's about all one can expect of a girl like me.

I think I'll join you for the Ovid Metamorphosis thing. I bought that book years ago, but never read it because the professor who was "mentoring" me dropped me at his wife's insistence.

You didn't say whether you liked it, only that you found it violent and blubbery - for many, violent and blubbery is high praise indeed! I myself grew up in a double wide. Are you a double wide type, or did you come from the other side of the trailer park?

I grew up in a double wide. Ours was a rather upscale trailer park. It was strictly forbidden to work on one's car in one's driveway. You had to take it to a lot out of public view if you wanted to carry on like that.

I'm probably going to at least follow along the discussion of Moby Dick. The opening posts/pre-discussion of the book looked pretty good.

I've been on a lot of Internet forums, and I've seen it happen where some people get an idea in their heads that someone is really someone else, and there's really nothing to be done about it. So, I thought I'd provide some flimsy "proof" that I'm not a man named Henry right away, before that idea got legs.

Most of the discourse here goes over my head. Part of that may be down to there being a lot of in-jokes, but I think it's mostly due to my being a philistine.

There is a wiki page with a history of our group, but long story short, Henri-Etta started this group in 2009 to help him get through James Joyce's Ulysses which was our first group read. Then, we started reading other things together. That's what I would call the main purpose of the list but we have all become friends and discuss lots of other stuff besides our group reads.

I had noticed an ongoing topic containing "plnats" and figured it must be a running joke of some kind (a bit like "pwned," perhaps) because it was too obvious to be an overlooked typo. This passage in the group's history seemed to confirm that impression.

It's simpler, my dear. I MC the nature thread and have for a while, and when the thread gets too long with messages (and takes a long time to load into various computers), a new one is created. As the master of ceremonies, I have to give it a name (variations on nature and a brief description), and about the third or fourth thread witch I did, I misstakenly typed plnat instead of plant. Alas, you cannot undo a thread name, as you can edit a message. The misspelling was a source of great amusement among the naturalists, and the next time I was about to make a nature thread switch I was told to keep the plnat. Like the humble servant of le peuple that I am, I did. So it had nothing to do with Monsieur Misanthropique, or whatever he's calling himself nowadays, or his periodic disillusionments.

The names of threads are not editable (a word? No?) so mistakes remain enshrined in the Salon forever. We thought plnats was too special so we appropriated it as part of the great Salon lexicon (on which there is a discussion thread, somewhere buried).

We are a very active discussion group so there are just too many threads in the archives or I would suggest you just dive into them. i suspect even our most active members feel overwhelmed when they've been off line for a few days or a week and have all this catching up to do.

(anecdote--i went with some friends on a hard drive from the slovene coast to vienna and then prague, where waits was playing and back to vienna the same night. it was all fine, but the highlight was running into Tim Robbins, me coming down, him exiting his row; i gave him a warm pat on the shoulder and pretending to be slavic told him 'good politics, sir' friends told me my Slovene was imperfect)

I'm sure Mr. Robbins noted that nothing was amiss with your slovenščina.
