This really isn't a very welcoming thread. I don't understand the presumption that everyone on the internet is sitting behind his or her computer in the buff. Oh sure... I have no doubt that many of the regulars in the Salon actually do post in the all together, but geez Louise, it's just too much information for a "Welcome" thread. How 'bout a little decorum? How 'bout a little tolerance for Fully Clothed Posters? How 'bout a new Welcome Thread that doesn't make haberdasherial judgments?

3inkie_fingers

Looking back, I see that the first post reads "Welcome, New Salonistas," and not "Welcome, Nude Salonistas."

Never mind.

my son has been a dylan addict since the age of four--in the car he goes utterly quiet and listens to every word...he likes the pogues now, too, but dylan up to 1967 or so, and even some later, really gets him--this all being in support of the acidic travelling theory.

Nude Salonistas? Does this have anything to do with another group I've seen, "Exotic Male Dancers who Librarything?" I thought about joining that group, except for the fact I would starve if I relied on that profession to bring home the bacon: not even my wife wants to see me in the buff.

I should probably take a moment to berate thank A_musing for formally inviting me into this vast waste of time charming little group, and to offer every assurance that I will strive to annoy the crap out of the rest of you comport myself in the manner displayed by the other posters here. To that end, how come the chubby chick up there is wearin' spinach on her head and doin' a breast exam?

The Naked and the Nude
Robert Graves

For me, the naked and the nude
(By lexicographers construed
As synonyms that should express
The same deficiency of dress
Or shelter) stand as wide apart
As love from lies, or truth from art.

Lovers without reproach will gaze
On bodies naked and ablaze;
The Hippocratic eye will see
In nakedness, anatomy;
And naked shines the Goddess when
She mounts her lion among men.

The nude are bold, the nude are sly
To hold each treasonable eye.
While draping by a showman's trick
Their dishabille in rhetoric,
They grin a mock-religious grin
Of scorn at those of naked skin.

The naked, therefore, who compete
Against the nude may know defeat;
Yet when they both together tread
The briary pastures of the dead,
By Gorgons with long whips pursued,
How naked go the sometime nude!

Welcome back, fiery bovine! An awful lot has changed. This used to be "Welcome to the Salon", and formerly JOLLY MOLLY's (the dawn of bant), and prior to that, greetings from the Naughty Haughty.

Although new members have slowed to a trickle, the Salon is booomin.' We're still one of the hottest (activitiest) sites in the LT world.

I'll FedEx out a New Members packet so you can get re-established. Please return all forms, in triplicate. There's some Claret and Cabernet over on the Secretary Desk. Kick back, enjoy.

How fitting you join us. The current salon beverage appears to be Beaujolais, but we could switch to Bordeaux.

Located in southwestern France, the Gers is part of the Midi-Pyrénées region. It is surrounded by the departments of Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, Landes, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The Gers is often referred to as amongst the least densely populated, or most rural, areas in all of Western Europe.

Sounds good, baswood. We will all be dropping in on you this summer. Preferably at a time when that damn bell isn't ringing.

Hey salonista's, thanks for the welcome. Sandydog, bowel movements are my chief concern these days.

I'm off to Bordeaux for a few days next week to taste the wine, but I don't think I will be taking 2666 with me - it's such a big book.

A good time to drop in is during the jazz festival http://www.jazzinmarciac.com/ete.html?PHPSESSID=5a9945ded90bff3248736e7ce1b2ecd5 I'll be in the champagne tent in Marciac's town square. Thea leave the barbecue at home, after all this is France and you wouldn't want to upset the natives.

inkie-fingers,

I prefer posting while buff, but I do preserve the limits of decorum by wearing a hat from my vast collection.

Just to let everyone know. Two new little doelings have arrived at the east Tennessee dacha--Gabrielle and Giselle (both three weeks old). Giselle looks like Michael Jackson in the last stages of his Diana Ross incarnation--before his nose fell off and all that. Gabrielle is a beauty as well and quite stubborn. I would post pictures but Giselle and Gabby say they don't feel comfortable posing in the buff. They're not those kind of goats.

And baswood-welcome. But I would think Bordeaux, wine, and big books just naturally go together. I feel rather embarrassed that one of our new salonistas openly admits to leaving big books at home when traveling to Bordeaux. If you were visiting to east Tennessee, I could understand your reluctance. Carrying around any big book other than THE BOOK can get one lynched. That's why I shacked up with the wicked but seductive Baron von Kindle. He's svelte and no one knows the size of his book.

Brings tears to my eyes, dawg!

I do so miss the Soviet Union so. What beloved enemies they were to us, in stark contrast to today's invisible foes. Those were the glory days when evil was evil and black was black and white was white and our fight was right.

DMS--German and Afrikaans are nice, but I fear you will remain a conditional member with the rest of us unless you can come up with the Latin.

Hi Meredy, Welcome ! Happy to have you here !!

Stick with us for some time and you will see a number of running jokes popping up in this Salon. Grumpy is one of them.

We read books too and discuss them thoroughly, can I offer you a group - read of Moby Dick starting the first of January ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTsRUIVv2WM

200Meredy
Dic 7, 2011, 6:55 pm

Thanks, Macumbeira. It's nice to be greeted warmly. I thought there might be a story to the "grumpy" label.

And thanks for the invitation. I have already done my service with Moby Dick. I wrote papers on it at least three times as an undergraduate. (Got A's on them, too.) After I finished college, I noticed the book on my shelf one day and said--hey, maybe it's time I actually read that thing. So I did. It turned out to be a really good book.

I was too much of a lit'ry snob ever to use Cliff Notes, so I had winged it through the papers. That's a skill that's stood by me ever since.

Captain Mac,

What do you think Meredy (Hi, Meredy; welcome!) meant by "lit'ry snob"? Should we be concerned?

203Macumbeira
Dic 8, 2011, 2:24 am

( whispering to Henrietta )

she means literally snob, not literary... I guess. Literally snobs use mac - notes, not cliff notes... I think.

( back to Meredy )

ok Meredy Baby, I am the Salon Profiler and you look just like what we need here. Triple A is good, like triple B, C, D or E... as long as it is trippple. The grumpy thing was a running joke ( lots of them here ) but you have to stay a bit longer to catch them.
Look at me, I planned to stay here for 3 weeks and here I am now for 7 years ! Like everybody here, seven years...reading everlasting...

ok short introduction; the guys there in the corner throwing harpoons at each other are warming up for Moby Dick which will be group - read as from 1 january.

The body dissected on the table is Alexander Theroux. We are looking for something intellectually sexual but cannot find it...
What else ? Ah yes the gay lists ! We love and loathe lists here... especially around X-mas.

There is weather information, there are birthday celebrations... ah see for yourself , always something going on..

Ah and one more thing, We like gods here very much ( always small g and plural ) but fear the Monotheistic One, well... there is a bible study group somewhere anyhow, feel free to have a look...

There are also writers you should never ever mention, because this place can turn into hell in no time. ( Whispering ) it is (... ) and ( ... ) and especially (... ) don't ever mention them? ever...

But we love James Joyce, ....we really do, ...all of us.

Lurking is ok , but participating is better... pimp a review and we hotlist it for you.. yes we have the power do to such things, reviews is what we need...

I am off , I am off , your on your own Meredy... good luck

Hello. My name is Katy. I've just joined LT, and this is the first group I've checked out. You look like an interesting bunch.

I grew up in a trailer park, and speak with a southern accent. I attended a public university and am not very well read. I follow book lists compiled by people who attended highly-regarded universities. My hope is to learn to more convincingly ape my betters.

I recently read Moby Dick for another book club run by a comedian. I thought it was 500 pages of blubber culminating in a whirlpool of violence, but that's about all one can expect of a girl like me.

I think I'll join you for the Ovid Metamorphosis thing. I bought that book years ago, but never read it because the professor who was "mentoring" me dropped me at his wife's insistence.

Welcome, Ms. Radcliffe! May I call you 'cliffe?!

Having read Moby Dick recently, you should feel free to join our discussions. You didn't say whether you liked it, only that you found it violent and blubbery - for many, violent and blubbery is high praise indeed! I myself grew up in a double wide. Are you a double wide type, or did you come from the other side of the trailer park?

212kradcliffe
Dic 13, 2011, 4:45 pm

I grew up in a double wide. Ours was a rather upscale trailer park. It was strictly forbidden to work on one's car in one's driveway. You had to take it to a lot out of public view if you wanted to carry on like that.

I'm probably going to at least follow along the discussion of Moby Dick. The opening posts/pre-discussion of the book looked pretty good.

>208 Macumbeira:,209: I'm not someone named Henry. I'm seriously brand-new to LT. You can find evidence of my existence here:

https://twitter.com/#!/KatyRadcliffe

and here:

http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1101676-katy

Of course, neither of those preclude the possibility of my having assumed an identity of someone named "Henry" so I may not have proven anything.

213MeditationesMartini
Dic 13, 2011, 4:55 pm

I actually hope you're Henry more now that you've provided evidence of an elaborate existence that would, by necessity, have to have been faked if you were (him). Apparently we'd all rather only meet new people if they're people we already know in disguise?

Hey, fuck that! Welcome, K-Rad.

Katy, welcome to both LibraryThing and Le Salon. I'm so sorry that you've had to deal with, in such a short time (my goodness, you just show up, and this is the reception you receive?: Who are you, really!?), so many salonistas' unfounded suspicions that you are somebody other than who you say you are. 219kradcliffe
Dic 14, 2011, 11:24 am

I'm now thinking this Henry must be a fascinating fellow.

I've been on a lot of Internet forums, and I've seen it happen where some people get an idea in their heads that someone is really someone else, and there's really nothing to be done about it. So, I thought I'd provide some flimsy "proof" that I'm not a man named Henry right away, before that idea got legs.

Most of the discourse here goes over my head. Part of that may be down to there being a lot of in-jokes, but I think it's mostly due to my being a philistine.

Thank you in advance for tolerating me.

222absurdeist

220> Yes, it is possible.

Katy, you seem like a good sport. You'll just have to forgive these salonistas' paranoia. This "Henry" once traumatized them terribly with his antics and they still have not forgotten.

The last time I heard the word "philistine" spoken in Le Salon it was spoken by tomcatMurr in reference to a member from that other place in that thread he started when "Henry" was suspended. July/Aug. 2009, if memory serves.

I wish every new member would just jump into the fray and be themselves like Katy. This place would be wild(er) were that to become a reality.

I've got to admit, Lisa, I thought the hottie was being channeled in a couple of those paragraphs, and think how stunned I was knowing it wasn't me!

Ah! So "philistine" is a trigger. I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks for the nice words about my review of DOII, tomcatMurr. But, I don't think I can fully do both sites at the same time. I did enter a few of my favorite books, here. I mean, in case people were curious about my tastes. (Why they would be, I don't know.)

I'm still trying to figure out what this forum is all about. There's hijinks and tomfoolery, obviously.

Hi Katy!

There is a wiki page with a history of our group, but long story short, Henri-Etta started this group in 2009 to help him get through James Joyce's Ulysses which was our first group read. Then, we started reading other things together. That's what I would call the main purpose of the list but we have all become friends and discuss lots of other stuff besides our group reads.

You won't find plnat on wiki, Meredy. It's one of those insider things. But since you do some editing I can reveal that it was a mistake that became an affectation.

233Meredy
Dic 15, 2011, 6:50 pm

>232 copyedit52:

?? I found this in the account at the link: "So he waxed Misanthropique in his disillusionment and retired to a rude hut in a forest to grow small green plnats of happiness (though sometimes he missed the bright lights and dropped by the salon for a vodka). "

I had noticed an ongoing topic containing "plnats" and figured it must be a running joke of some kind (a bit like "pwned," perhaps) because it was too obvious to be an overlooked typo. This passage in the group's history seemed to confirm that impression.

Meredy, you are on top of the game.

236copyedit52
Modificato: Dic 15, 2011, 7:06 pm

It's simpler, my dear. I MC the nature thread and have for a while, and when the thread gets too long with messages (and takes a long time to load into various computers), a new one is created. As the master of ceremonies, I have to give it a name (variations on nature and a brief description), and about the third or fourth thread witch I did, I misstakenly typed plnat instead of plant. Alas, you cannot undo a thread name, as you can edit a message. The misspelling was a source of great amusement among the naturalists, and the next time I was about to make a nature thread switch I was told to keep the plnat. Like the humble servant of le peuple that I am, I did. So it had nothing to do with Monsieur Misanthropique, or whatever he's calling himself nowadays, or his periodic disillusionments.

237anna_in_pdx
Dic 15, 2011, 7:08 pm

The names of threads are not editable (a word? No?) so mistakes remain enshrined in the Salon forever. We thought plnats was too special so we appropriated it as part of the great Salon lexicon (on which there is a discussion thread, somewhere buried).

We are a very active discussion group so there are just too many threads in the archives or I would suggest you just dive into them. i suspect even our most active members feel overwhelmed when they've been off line for a few days or a week and have all this catching up to do.

yup. god, I hate going away knowing I have all this catching up to do when I get back.

gosh, I need a valprotini. Meredy, this is a salon special cocktail consisting of valium and prozac in vodka (or gin for the philistines) in a martini glass. very cold. we are also madly partial to herring gelato and pigeon feathers, although the latter may be an acquired taste.

Some welcomes are due! Mausbartl, darsu, daleree, welcome! I note all three of you hail from interesting places - Mausbarti from Vienna, Darsu from Finland, and Daleree from Seoul. Mausbarti, you've got Proust and the Squid in your library - that's a touchstone book for me, Maryanne Wolf is someone I've great admiration for. Dale, you mention as favorite authors Jorge Luis Borges, Michel Foucault, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Žižek - I've heard all those names bandied about here but Zizek, so you're going to need to spread the word of Zizek and get that discussion going somewhere. Darsu, you look like you might be interested in the upcoming read focused on the Tang; we've chatted a bit on the not-so-active Mahabharata threads, and perhaps we'll have to stir more up on that here.

Welcome all!
