Am I crazy, or are there no books about antique knitting needles? I couldn't even find a website about them. Anyone have any suggestions?

My search terms have been antique, vintage, knitting needles ... is there something I'm missing?

Or is there a huge niche to fill?

(I've been wanting to look up some of the needles I have, and maybe start collecting more. It's fun to have a collection, especially if it's usable!)

I think theres a ravelry group devoted to antique knitting needles, but I don't know of any resources. I have a couple of old needles that I was trying to figure out - couldn't find anything!

A cursory search of Rav didn't provide any answers. If anyone finds the group, post it here please!

Try search terms "needlework tools" along with antique and you should find some websites. I found a book called antique needlework tools and embroideries that may have some knitting needles in it, and one called the Story of Antique Needlework Tools. Also try "textile tools." It's a starting point, anyway.

sonyagreen, Martha Stewart Living did a nice article on vintage knitting needles a couple of years back. It might be archived on their website. I myself have several sets of vintage bakelite needles (green blue and tortoise shell) and a few real balene crochet hooks for picking up dropped stitches. I will have to look for the ravelry group.

Actually - I don't think it was a ravelry group, but a topic in a forum - I was searching for a vintage knitting needle by name, and it came up. But, I bet if you created a group, you would probably get many members to join :)

Oooh, good idea! Thanks for the help! Yay, alternate search terms.
