We are planning to have Readathons weekly throughout 2011, primarily on Sundays, Tuesdays or Fridays although, of course, if someone chooses to host one on another day, that is fine as well.

Keep your eyes here for notifications about who is doing the Readathons and when they will take place throughout the year. Separate Readathon threads can be started as the initiator chooses.

Sounds good, Stasia. I'm there!
I hope seperate readathon threads will be linked to this one.

Dic 19, 2010, 5:50 am

I was hoping that people who set the Readathon threads up (depending on the interest level), would link them back here as well, so that someone popping in could tell at a glance whether or not a Readathon was happening that day.

Okay, here's number one then! I wanted to do another 24-hour read-a-thon in the New Year after doing Dewey's a while back, so the holidays seemed like a good time! No thread for it yet - I'll post here once it's up and running - but we're trying to work out the dates:

Vota: If you're hoping to join the readathon in January, is Monday 3rd-Tuesday 4th going to be a workable time for you?

So far the same poll over on my thread is sitting at 4 yes, 0 no...

I'm not clear on what constitutes a 'readathon', aside from reading. Do you list what you read? Number of pages? Time spent? Are there any rules (well, that doesn't sound like a question I should ask this group, does it)?

8DeltaQueen50
Dic 19, 2010, 10:54 pm

#7 - I'm glad you asked ffortsa, I would like to know more about what consitutes a 'readathon' as well.

9alcottacre
Dic 20, 2010, 2:52 am

Basically, when we do Readathons we check in every hour or so and just update what we are reading with the other folks participating. Some of us can do the entire Readathon, whose time frame will depend on the host, some of us can only join in for a few hours. We have no rules (who, us?) Some of us will list our total page count when we come to the end of the Readathon, others will not.

I hope that answers your questions, ladies! If not, I am sure someone else can chime in.

10mlnelson01
Dic 20, 2010, 5:43 pm

Do you all read the same book? Are they 24-hour events, or less or more? It sounds like fun, except I can't remember a day when I could read all day straight. This might be a good excuse!

11Kel_Light
Dic 20, 2010, 5:58 pm

Ooh sounds great! For me it depends if my dear mother is still staying with us :)

12Ape
Dic 20, 2010, 8:04 pm

We should dig up Ellie blog and forum posts who are curious about what a readathon is. She read for 24 hours straight, with minimal stoppage, and logged all the pages and books she read. It was enjoyable just to cheer and offer support.

I'll probably be doing the same this time.

13elliepotten
Modificato: Dic 21, 2010, 8:23 am

Okay, there are different types of readathons... Sometimes on LT they organise ones where everyone reads for an hour or two and between us we all make up 24 hours of round-the-world reading. Sometimes a readathon might only be for a few hours.

The early January one will be an all-day, all-night, read-for-24-hour-er, by simple virtue of the fact that I want to do another one while I'm off for the hols! But anyone can join in for a few hours. I'll start a thread nearer the time where you can drop by to chat with everyone, or leave links to your thread/blog so we can drop by and cheer you on.

When I did the Dewey read-a-thon I blogged every hour or two, and dropped by LT as well, with updates on what I was reading, how much I'd read and how long for (in some hours I read very little, or fell asleep for part of it; others I read for nearly the whole hour), what I was snacking on, how I was getting on staying awake and focussing... There were memes at hours 1, 12 and 24, and in between I posted pics, funny vids, or whatever else I fancied to make it more fun! That was a big organised one so there were challenges every hour too that you could do as a break from reading, like 'write a cheer for your fellow read-a-thon-ers' or 'post a pic of your bookshelves', but this time anything goes, really. My read-a-thon blog posts from October can be found here if anyone wants to take a look.

Basically when it comes to readathons there are only three principles - read, update, and enjoy it!

So far it's looking like 3rd-4th is going to be the best time for the 24-hourers, but of course anyone who can't manage the commitment this time can always read along for an hour or two, or come leave a few words of encouragement for flagging readers! The cheerleaders in the Dewey read-a-thon really helped keep everyone motivated and remind each reader sitting at home how many others were reading along too...

14Kel_Light
Dic 21, 2010, 9:07 am

Sounds great Ellie! 3rd would be better for me as I think(!?) I go back to work on the 4th :) But I could always do my own mini readathon if the date doesn't work:)

I'm going to have to pass on this first readathon of 2011 because I'll be driving back to MA from NY on Monday and I think it may be slightly unsafe to read and drive at the same time ... especially when I tend to fall asleep listening to audio books.

16alcottacre

17elliepotten
Dic 22, 2010, 7:24 am

18elliepotten
Dic 22, 2010, 7:44 am

Okay, the current decision on the first read-a-thon is to run from Monday 3rd-Tuesday 4th, starting at 2pm Texas time/8pm Brit time on the Monday, and running for 24 hours. (There are time converters online if you need to work out what time it'll be where you are!) I'll set up a new thread for us in a day or two, where we can pop in through the day - and we'll get links going to everyone who's taking part, thread links, blog links or both, whatever you like, so we know where to go to cheer people on!

Feel free to read along for the whole shebang, or just for a few hours - it's a great excuse for giving yourself a stretch of guilt-free reading time... :-)

Ok, so we were having a discussion over on Ellie's Read-a-thon: 3rd-4th Jan Thread and I thought I'd move it over on to here. I love the idea of a 24-hour read-a-thon simply because it allows more people to participate in any way they can within that window of time which gives people in various time zones and various availabilities a chance to participate without the obligation of going for a straight 24 hour period (although I'd love to try that which is why I'm sorry I missed yours, Ellie). It would be great as suggested by Stasia to have one every week, for however long the organizers want to hold them for. I happen to have a lot of time on my hands until mid-January when I have some classes starting, so unless someone else wants to do it, I'd be happy to start one up next week. Anyone interested?

True! Tonight? Say 10pm-10am Thursday? That is a 12 hour span. Surely we could pick up a few more people who can read during those hours :)

ETA: Or we could just do a 24 hour one, with no one being obligated to stay up for the 24 hours, just reading as they can during that period.

31Smiler69
Gen 5, 2011, 7:32 am

Wellllll... I guess that could work but I was hoping to have a couple of days to get ready for it... and maybe yes, get a few more people to jump in. I dunno?

I didn't do very well on the last one, but I do like the idea of them, especially with the no guilt caveat to read when you can. I kept getting distracted by things I couldn't really put off.

35alcottacre
Gen 5, 2011, 8:24 am

#34: Jean, the majority of us cannot take off huge chunks of time just to read. The idea is just to pop it when you can and if you can read the entire time, great!

#35 yes exactly. Besides, I have to take Coco out for walks and I DO need some sleep as well. And coffee breaks. And such. Friday is perfect for me!

41Smiler69

#40 I thought Ellie did a great job organizing it. I doubt I'll be able to do such a bang-up job, but I'll have a look at her blog to get some ideas, and hopefully we'll all have fun regardless of my organizing skills or lack thereof. You're welcome to join in whenever you're available. I doubt I'll be up to stay up for 24 hours straight either and doubt I'll even try—I need my sleep! But the point is to have a bigger window of time to allow for people with different schedules and in different time zones to jump in whenever is most convenient.

Another read-a-thon down, thanks to the lovely Ilana! It feels pretty good seeing those pages stack up and getting the reading year off to a fighting start in good company... :-)

Now, I know I only pulled off a 24-hourer last week, but The Reading Machine over here (*waves hello to Stasia*) is already chomping at the bit for another one... Today's read-a-thon, being at a weekend, was ideal for a lot of people I think, but I'm CONSIDERING holding another Monday/Tuesday event, starting this coming Monday (mid-afternoon most places, 8pm here in the UK) and running for 24 hours again. I have a tiny blissful window of time where I get 2 days off a week (thank you, tourist town off-season!) so I'd like to make the most of it! Would anyone be interested? If there's a few people wanting to read along, either for a few hours over the day or for a longer stretch, I'll start a thread and get collecting links and names again. If not... I'll just read anyway! So, an orderly show of hands please?

Vota: All those in favour of launching a third read-a-thon from Monday 10 to Tuesday 11 January, say aye!

I just votes 'yes' for you Mon.-Tues. afternoon event Ellie.

Just copying some of the comments I made on the other thread so we can preserve them for posterity. lol

Ellie: thanks so much for the positive feedback. I think what helped make our second read-a-thon successful was that I didn't try to re-invent the wheel and used your template all along. That made my job easier and much less scary than if I'd tried a whole new approach. Nothing wrong with another approach, I'm sure, if someone wants to do that, but I figured, if it ain't broke, why fix it? And also I liked what you had done and was sad I'd missed it the first time so 're-enacted' it, so to speak. The only thing I might switch around for the following events are the questions for the memes so that those of us participating more than once don't get bored with them.

I also have to come clean about something (which is weighing heavily on my conscience): I did try to look up some of the individual threads of our participants, but because everyone was taking part at different times, this proved impractical and all too often, a waste of time as there were no 'thon-related posts the few times I clicked around. So I pretty well gave up on that and just read the messages on the Jan 7-8th thread (otherwise I'd have had NO time at all to actually do any reading!)

So I would suggest for next time that we encourage everyone to post here, and optionally double-post (or post whatever they like) on their own threads just to keep computer time down to a minimum during the event, while allowing to make individual comments when we want to.

On Monday afternoon, I'm going to see 'The King's Speech' with a friend, followed by a movie, so I probably couldn't get started until about 7:30. On Tuesday, I have a noon appointment in the office and a 2:00 dental appointment (during which I could get some reading done . . . ). I just posted this over on the last read-a-thon thread, but I thought I'd copy it here too:

You know, I think these read-a-thons are doing wonders for my reading in between times as well. Perhaps because it's an extended period of absolute focus on each book. Sometimes I go through spells where I just can't concentrate on a book and not a word goes in, but the read-a-thons are actually helping! This morning I got up at a decent hour (amazingly, since I was so over-tired last night I had to pick up another book in the end, just to push me towards sleep) and have read a big chunk of a difficult natural science book that I've been enjoying - but struggling with - for nearly a month now. It's all making sense, I'm following it much more clearly, it's great! And I've doubled my reading this year so far overnight. Wow.

If that's not a good reason to pull a crazy all-night reading frenzy every once in a while, I don't know what is! And they've been so much fun so far, seeing what everyone else is reading, eating, feeling and generally up to each hour, all indulging our bookishness together...

65crazy4reading
Gen 12, 2011, 11:49 am

I have enjoyed the ones I have participated in. My only problem is that real life keeps interferring with my reading. I really like the one that was done on the weekend. If I wasn't busy this weekend I would think about starting one. I just know I won't be around that much since my daughter goes back to college and I have a nephews birthday party.

I want to thank those that have organized the read-a-thons so far this year.

Weekends would be fantastic! Week days are just too hectic with work.

67elliepotten
Gen 12, 2011, 4:40 pm

The Monday/Tuesday ones have simply been because as hostess with the mostess, I have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. And my first read-a-thon, way back before this was started, was deliberately timed for people who maybe work all weekend so it's a bit of a tradition for me! Ilana's last one was Friday to Saturday.

Anyone, feel free to start a weekend one! I'd definitely participate, and just read before/after/at work as much as possible. And sleep a full night, obviously... If a few other people had a go at hosting it'd help spread the load and keep this thing going over the months too, which would be great!

68LauraBrook
Gen 12, 2011, 4:45 pm

64: Ellie, I totally agree! I have gotten through so many books, either finishing them completely or gotten through large portions, by trying to read for 24 hours straight through. Or, really, by reading intentionally I found myself making wonderful progress. I've read 6 books this year, which is certainly more than I had read at this point in 2010, and I think that is certainly due to the read-a-thons. I'm so thankful to the hosts for all of the work they do - I don't know if I could host one myself.

I'm so thankful for LT in so many ways, and especially these more spur-of-the-moment read-a-thons we've been having so far this year, to connect with others who are bookish and have engaging and smart and funny conversations. Unfortunately, even though my schedule is flexible and all over the place, I haven't been able to participate in a read-a-thon all the way through, but I know it will happen at some point. It's still early in the year, but I'm really enjoying how much (more thoughtful) reading I've done so far.

69Smiler69
Gen 12, 2011, 6:26 pm

If a few other people had a go at hosting it'd help spread the load and keep this thing going over the months too

I'm in complete agreement with you there! I've got art classes starting this weekend and am having trouble managing my energy (i.e. am practically narcoleptic lately, no joke) so I won't be able to host another one this week, but would definitely participate at least for a few hours if someone else takes up hosting duties!

I may give hosting a try, but not til summertime. Classes start in 1.5 wks. I don't think this semester will be as laden with homework, but I have classes M-Th and then work F-Sun. . . soooo I'll be busybusybusy nonetheless. Although, if I find a summer internship that might kill hosting abilities too. . . .

I've got Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays free this quarter, so I'd be willing to host a Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday readathon or two sometime over the next couple of months. I'm waiting till I've participated in a couple, though, so I can get the hang of things. ;)

72Cariola

I'm off Friday-Sunday this semester, so I could host a weekend read-a-thon. I could do Thursday-Friday, too, but it would have to start later as I won't get home until after 5:30. But I'm also feeling not quite ready to host just yet.

73elliepotten
Gen 13, 2011, 9:42 am

It's really incredibly easy. Most of the work I do for a read-a-thon is before it even starts - starting a new thread for it, adding people's names to the top post as they sign up, and getting the meme questions ready somewhere. Most of them stay the same every time anyway, there's only a couple that change - like the 3 things about you that became 3 favourite books this last time.

Once the read-a-thon kicks off things pretty much take care of themselves. People are away reading most of the time and interact together anyway - I just take an extra five minutes to respond to a few people and visit their challenge threads if they're posting there too. A more time-strapped host could just pop back every couple of hours to make sure things are still rolling, or sign off for the night when they get too tired and come back later.

I think if I host again in the next week or so I'll post the memes right at the beginning, so people can go up and 'grab' them when they need them, and I can sleep a few hours instead of being there on the dot of every hour. Or we could run a more relaxed one over, say, two days, where people just drop back in every few hours with an update as to how they're getting on? We wouldn't even need memes and things for one like that, it'd be even more casual...

Any thoughts? Stasia and I are planning another 24 hour-er soon though, never fear!

74crazy4reading
Gen 13, 2011, 2:00 pm

I know I would love to host one but I won't be home this weekend so I don't want to host it. I will host one soon once I work things out with my son too, since we only have one computer. And now that my microsoft word is working I know I can create the memes there and just copy and paste when ready to use them.

I will keep an eye out for your and Stasia's next 24 hour-er..

And I would agree for doing next Thursday/Friday, January 20/21, if everyone would be up for starting at 6:00 EST. Or I suppose I could post the starting thread earlier if everyone else wants to begin at 4:00, but I could not begin to participate myself until later.

I don't know how to post one of those "Are you interested" polls, so if someone else would like to do it for me, post away!

77elliepotten
Gen 14, 2011, 4:47 pm

Is that 6am or pm? To post a poll, just use the same type of codes as you do for bold or italics, only use the word 'vote' instead of the 'b' or 'i'. Does that make sense without me actually doing it?!

P.S. I think we're up for another 24-hourer too, the following Monday/Tuesday, 24-25th. I'll be reading a fair amount on my days off this week too, but I don't think I can manage another all-night hosting gig yet - I'm having a week off! ;-)

Next weekend is a bust for me, but if the 20/21 happens I give my encouragement and well-wishing :)

24th is my 1st day back to school. . . so can't do the whole 24hrs. But, I can probably manage some reading that night. Might be boring school books though.

Hey, remember, there's always the possibility of launching a more casual read-a-thon (like a drop-in health centre but for books!) sometimes, or joining a 24 hour-er but only reading for a few hours... People seem to fall in along the way anyway - look at the last couple, we've started out with a handful of people and ended up with 20! Yay!

Deborah - Best thing to do is start the thread a day or two in advance anyway - gives people chance to settle in and get themselves sorted before the reading begins... :-)

I work Mon-Fri till 4 pm so I usually don't participate in the whole 24 hours. If I am able to I do a few hours. Volleyball just started for me and I have a game Tues. and Thurs. this coming week so I won't be able to participate, otherwise I would try to for just a few hours on Thurs. night.

If I happen to be off from work during the week then I would participate for the whole 24 or participate for more hours.

I voted "Yes" but will be in and out. I'll be starting late as I'll be working late on Thursday and have to work in the afternoon on Friday, so it'll be a little sporadic. I'll be in and out too - I work Thursday and Friday but I can read Thursday evening and through work on Friday. I seem to have dropped on the reading front this week without a read-a-thon to get the motivation up again! After only getting in two hours on the last work day read-a-thon (I knew I should not have moved to bed to read), I decided that I really should avoid those until the summer. This one will work out perfectly, though. I get out at 12 on Friday and I'm not proctoring, so I can get some reading done before then too. Yeah!

94Cariola

It's so great that you can all participate! Remember: you DON'T have to stay up all night to read. For me, that would be like taking out three days, two to read and one to sleep afterwards. And most of us just don't have that much down time. Like elliepotten says, participating in a read-a-thon gives you focus and motivation--even if it is only for a few straight hours at a time.

I am going to have a Readathon Tuesday night February 1st to Wednesday night February 2nd. I am planning on starting at 10pm CST and ending at 10pm CST. I may be doing the Readathon by myself as I know not many readers will be up, but anyone is welcome to join in if they like. I will not start a separate thread for it though unless I know that someone besides myself is taking part.

102YoungGeekyLibrarian

I cannot participate either since I do not even get home from work until 8am and then I will have to head to bed. I hope you all have a great time though!

The reason behind doing the 24 hour Readathons was to make sure that people on the other side of the world were included. I do not think that the host/hostess has to be there for the entire time. I know I was not for mine :)

123crazy4reading
Feb 3, 2011, 6:36 pm

I understand that they are normally 24 hours I just know I don't want to do one for that amount of time. I need to sleep and trying to run it for that whole time is just too much. And yes, if you set up the initial thread with basic instructions for those who have never done a read-a-thon (which you can copy from previous hosts), then it basically runs itself and you really don't need to be there most of the time. The 24 hours isn't to oblige anyone, including the host to be there the whole time, it's more a way to make sure that as many people as possible can participate over different time zones and busy schedules.

I might be up for another hosting gig on Mon/Tues, depending how this hellish half-term pans out... I might be desperate for some decent reading time, or I might be knackered and want to do nothing more strenuous than crash out with a DVD box set, so I'll leave it a day or two before I decide! :-)

I'm going to join in for at least part of the time. It'll be 10 p.m. to 10 p.m. for me so I don't think I'll get much reading done tonight but tomorrow is supposed to be very cold here. A perfect day to stay indoors and read.

Hope your read-a-thon went well...

Just to respond to/follow up my own message in #177, I decided I just couldn't manage a 24-hourer tonight. Tomorrow will be my first day off in two weeks, and I was up so early this morning to boot - I think I'll probably be asleep by about 10pm! I'm planning on trying to get in a decent amount of reading (and pizza) during daylight hours though, so you can always drop by my thread and say hi, anytime! :-)

#205 Carmenere is unable to co-host this mega-read-a-thon (too many familial issues going on) so if you'd like to do it Monica, be my guest. I will certainly pop in many times during the weekend.

I'd be glad to co-host the mega-read-a-thon. Especially if there's three of (or more) of us splitting up the job, should be manageable. I could start Friday evening into part of Saturday maybe? Open to suggestions.

210maggie1944
Mar 3, 2011, 2:25 pm

Mar 3, 2011, 2:34 pm

I'm going to the cinema with my dad to see The King's Speech tomorrow afternoon, and don't think I'll be home much before 7pm. But if someone can start if off before then I'll be glad to take over when I get in.

212maggie1944
Mar 3, 2011, 2:41 pm

I could start it off on Friday morning at about 6 am, my time, which is 9 am LibraryThing time in the US of A. I don't know how that translates into European, or Australian, time so I'll have to let you all figure that out. If someone wants to start a thread before then just for folks to check in that could be OK, too.

I'll start then, unless I hear differently from any of you.

213Cariola
Mar 3, 2011, 4:58 pm

212> That's awfully early, especially since a lot of folks said they work on the weekdays but could participate a good part of Saturday and/or Sunday. I think we're taking on a bit much to have it go for more than 48 hours.

I would not be available on Friday until about 5:00 EST but would prefer to start at 7:00. Could you or Ilana host from 7:00 p.m. on Friday to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday? Or I could get us started on Friday, then pick up again Saturday night. I would be good for 7:00 p.m. Saturday to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.

(This is starting to get complicated.)

Yes, it is, Cariola. Sorry I think that may be my fault.
Just choose your time and plan it around that. Anybody who can join you will join in when they can. This should be a stress free experience for all involved. :)

216crazy4reading
Mar 3, 2011, 7:30 pm

Okay. I agree it is getting complicated. I do like the idea of having a Friday to Sunday read a thon. I know I am busy Saturday night from about 6 or 7 pm (EST) till I don't know when.

So Cariola do you want me to start a thread for the read - a -thon to start Friday at about 6 or 7 pm and to go until Sunday? Just let me know by either a message on my profile or posting it in here.

217maggie1944
Mar 3, 2011, 7:39 pm

My plans for Friday have, since I first volunteered, become a little more fluid. I don't actually know exactly when I'll be available and probably won't know until later tonight.

Suffice it to say, if I'm ready to start reading....and no one else has started the Read-A-Thon, I'll just start it. No harm, no foul. OK?

218crazy4reading
Mar 3, 2011, 9:22 pm

That's fine with me.

219Cariola
Mar 3, 2011, 11:18 pm

OK, here's the plan, based on your messages above, if everyone co-hosting is agreeable.

With three folks trading off in 16-hour shifts, 5:00 p.m. EST Friday to 5:00 p.m. EST Sunday sounds good. I don't think we should run this for more than 48 hours, and if we start any earlier, those who want to read Sunday afternoon and evening, especially those in the western US, will be shut out.

Monica, why don't you get us started on Friday at 5:00 and run it for the first 16 hours until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday? Ilana, could you do the next stretch, from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until 1:00 a.m. on Sunday? Then I can pick it up for the final stretch. Let me know here or in a PM if this sounds doable. I have a bunch of reading woman pix and ideas for memes saved on my computer, if anyone would like them.

Maggie, it sounds like you're not sure about when you can participate, but it would be great to have your help, if not now, maybe next time. Or if you want to start early on Friday, why not host a "quickie" (8 hours) prior to the "mega"?

220crazy4reading
Mar 4, 2011, 6:43 am

Okay I will start the thread later today at work. I will also email my saved meme to my work and see if I can throw some new ones together. I will to the 5 pm Friday till 9am Saturday. If I need to cover longer I will.

Mag 16, 2011, 8:58 am

Mrssmith: Hosting is pretty easy. I've done one and used a similar pattern to the ones before. In the past we've had the first thread explain/have the time info and also have it as a master list of people participating (sometimes including links to their personal threads). We've also had the opening/mid-way/closing memes. Other than those, you don't have to do much besides post progress. The thread pretty much keeps itself going. I agree with Chatterbox--check the old readathon threads to get a handle on it/to thieve memes, etc.

I can't WAIT for winter to come around at last so I can start read-a-thonning again. I've been reading back over my old blog posts/LT threads and I got so much read and had so much fun!

Where's the readathon? It's almost 4:30 here in the southwestern US. I thought we'd be up and running since it's 7:30 Eastern time.

Yep, it says 7 p.m. EST Sunday to 7 p.m. Monday above, but I don't see a thread. I'm going to go read anyway, and maybe I'll host one later this week.

Sorry, it has been a chaotic weekend, as I battled work & migraine, and neglected to post a link here as well as the readathon thread. Apologies...

The good news is that I'll be able to participate in the ReadaThing!

Would anyone be up for a readathon during the week or over next weekend? Since I am at home on sick leave, I could host any day or days.

absolutely, I would.

I would try to join in.

OK, let's see what days work best for everyone. I liked the longer drop-in-when-you-can readathon we had earlier, so let's try a few options:

Vota: I could particpate in a readathon from 12:00 p.m. (noon) EST on Monday, November 28, through 12:00 EST on Wednesday, November 30.

Corrispondenza attuale: 8, No 2, Incerto 1

Here's a weekend option. I thought starting at noon was a good idea: not too early for the west coasters and not too late for our friends across the pond.

Vota: I could participate in a readathon from 12:00 noon EST on Saturday, December 2, through noon on Monday, December 4.

Corrispondenza attuale: 13, No 2, Incerto 1

I can participate part-time and also go to a Card Making Class, and on Monday, do a little child care work.

I prefer the weekend, but I could also do part during the week. Of course, my best intentions don't always materialize. :)

I'll keep tallying up votes and reading comments until Sunday evening. Thanks! Dropping in when you can is just fine.

I'm working Mon-Fri of the upcoming week, but I'm off this coming weekend, so I could participate in the second read on Sat Dec 3 and Sun Dec 4.

I would love to participate during the week except I work M-F and then come home to try and do cleaning, cooking and exercising before reading. I don't know if I could participate that much during the week. The weekends are better for me.

Pick a time, any time and I will participate as time allows.

I can do both of them, off and on, and I need to get some reading time in! Looking forward to it!

I would definitely prefer Monday to Wednesday, I get the next two days off to read. If you don't want to host both, let me know, I could host the one for Tuesday/Wednesday.

I might be able to join the weekend read after about 7 p.m. Saturday. I would love to, in fact!

Great! It's a little early to post the thread yet, but I'll get it up tomorrow. Looks like it will be a 48-hour readathon. Do you all like the time (noon EST Saturday to noon Monday), or should we start on Friday night?

446maggie1944
Nov 29, 2011, 4:48 pm

I would have a good deal more luck at getting some significant reading done if we started on Friday night. Of course, I could do that all by myself, couldn't I? Saturday is looking increasingly "booked" with a card making class, and then a movie with a buddy.

Nov 29, 2011, 6:39 pm

Well, let's go for 72 hours: say, 3:00 p.m on Friday to 3:00 on Monday. No pressure to participate for the entire time, just drop by when you can.

great idea!

449crazy4reading
Nov 29, 2011, 7:30 pm

I like that idea. I get done work at 4 on Friday and I need to just sit down and read.

So, is that 3 pm Friday (Eastern time)? That would be Noon Pacific time, right?

Heavens, I might actually get the Proust read before next week with that many readathon hours!! (and, touch wood, relatively little work...)

452Cariola
Nov 30, 2011, 12:05 pm

Yes, 3:00 Eastern time Friday to 3:00 Eastern time on Monday. That should make it early enough for our friends abroad to get started with us and yet it's close to the end of the work day for many of us. I'll get the thread going this afternoon.

453Citizenjoyce

I'll be there for most of it, reading from the southwestern US so starting at noon on Friday.

Here's the start-up thread for the Friday-to-Monday Drop-In Readathon. Hope you'll join us!

I also started a new Readathons thread, using the new "Continuation" feature. I included links to this thread and to the upcoming Readathon in the first message. Hope no one minds--this thread was getting awfully long!

Here's the link to join the May 11-14 Drop-In Read-a-Thon. Everyone is welcome to stop by for whatever amount of time feels comfortable.
