Any good NYRB volumes you feel would make a good holiday read?

The ones that pop out for me are:

Rock Crystal

and the children's volumes

The Box of Delights and The Little Bookroom

Any other Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice -y tales that occur to anyone?

Ha Marensr—I saw the header and was about to suggest Rock Crystal and The Box of Delights—but then saw that you stole my thunder!

While not a holiday book, Rebecca West's The Fountain Overflows has several beautiful early 20th-century (or are they late 19th-century?) British Christmas scenes.

Here's one of them http://bit.ly/fFBe5d

Sorry to steal your thunder.

I was thinking The Pilgrim Hawk has a lot of that dysfunctional holiday vibe and there is a strange little Christmas story in Paris Stories.

I could use a reread of The Fountain Overflows.

I adore The Fountain Overflows. It is one of my favorite books.

Simenon is my guess--an NYRB classic on vacation? Maybe two or three Simenons.

For Halloween or the birthday of someone with a morbid bent: Nightmare Alley by William Lindsay Gresham

For Valentine's: The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy ... perhaps with Season 1 of Mad Men and a pair of martini glasses.

Ooh and for Halloween Don't Look Now and Du Maurier's other spooky stories. Actually, I like a good spooky summer read as well.

For the beach I feel like The Long Ships is going to be good and of course The Summer Book
