I bought a Kindle 3 recently and I love it however it's a bit drab looking. I found these and thought that might help pretty it up some. Has anyone put one of these skins on their Kindle? If so, what do you think?

Hi Leah, DecalGirl is a great brand and leaves no residue, which can be a problem with some brands. I'd suggest a dark color - dark framing makes the screen brighter and larger feeling. Also, busy designs can be distracting while reading. I've used DecalGirl on white Kindles and prefer the glossy, though some people like the matte to reduce glare. I'm not using skins on my gray Kindle, but I have a gorgeous Oberon cover on it and that gives it beauty.

>auntmarge64 - thanks for your comments! I off to order a skin (so many to choose from) and eventually one of those lovely leather covers.

I got one of the 'official' covers for my Kindle, to save it when in my bag when out & about, but would love a skin- not available on UK Amazon yet :(

Hi Wonderlake,

Most people buy skins directly from the dealer. In the case of DecalGirl, it's http://www.decalgirl.com/category.view/Amazon-Kindle-Skins. They do ship internationally.

I've ordered one for my K2 from DecalGirl as well. Although, I did make a mistake of ordering a light coloured one. It did not occur to me when I made the order that a dark color would provide more contrast. :( I loved it otherwise, pretty easy to apply, (stress free for those with OCD tendencies, as you can remove it easily), and a nice surface that can be wiped. I still use a sleeve if I'm not using the leather case though.

Hi Leah,

I jumped on the Kindle bandwagon before the Kindle 3 was released, therefore I have a Kindle 2, which I love. And yes, it does look a little bland without a skin of some kind... so I bought one of those Decal Girl skins for my K2 shortly after I received the device. Much nicer, I must say, although the most interesting part of the design is on the back of my Kindle. Some people have noted that their skin is peeliing off of the device after a short time; I haven't had the problem myself so don't have details about that to share.

Despite having the skin on my K2, I still prefer to have a cover on it too; for protection of the screen, mainly. I chose the Moleskine cover http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine%C2%AE-Reporter-Style-Notebook-Display-Generation... because it provides space for a notebook, which I use at times, depending on what I'm reading.

I used a matte skin from DecalGirl on my K2i. I liked it at the time, but I noticed after about a month that the keys were gathering dust (or maybe dead skin flakes, haha), and eventually there was enough that the decal started peeling off. So I had to remove it, and unfortunately the skin removed a bunch of the protective sheen on the Kindle too. :( So now large portions of my Kindle are pitted and look scratched.

>8 schatzi: Wow, I've never heard that happening with a DecalGirl skin. Either the peeling off or the removing part of the kindle finish.

I've always had covers for my Kindles - at least, since my niece put a bottle on top of my bare K1 and the screen broke. The new Amazon commercial show the Kindle being manhandled just about anywhere without a cover, but I can't imagine doing that. If it's out of the house, or just put away at home, it's always in a good quality case.

I hadn't heard of it peeling off the finish either until I saw the damage after I took off the skin. :( I emailed DecalGirl about it, but I never got a response from them. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise, but I was still disappointed. I won't buy anything from them again.

The peeling, though, has been a problem for some of the decals, although I'm not sure why some have this problem while others don't. Maybe my skin is just particularly dry? :D

>10 schatzi: Are you on KindleBoards? They have an accessories forum where many DecalGirl fans hang out, and I think your experience would be of interest to them. Actually, I think DecalGirl has a representative on there too: www.kindleboards.com

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I still haven't ordered a skin for my Kindle 3. Now I am a bit hesitant after reading of schatzi's experience. Has anyone bought one recently? I am also considering the covers that come with book lights.

I bought a skin for my K3 because I have a thing for colors and unusual designs in general. I bought it from DecalGirl -- the one that looks like a library of books. I also keep my Kindle in a Kindle cover with the built-in booklight so the skin is not really that visible to onlookers; but I know it's there! I put a similar skin on a Dell laptop and it looked brand new when I peeled it off after several years. I cannot imagine how a plastic skin can pit and damage a plastic case.

I got a skin from DecalGirl for my Kindle 3. It went on very easily and looks fabulous. I also have a leather cover as well. So far I am very pleased with both.

Leahsimone, try Gelaskins.com, i use them for my kindle, my macbook and my ipad (yea I know i know, excessive geekiness) and i've never had any trouble. I have different skins for each which i've taken on and off every device and its never left a mark. I'm really happy with them.
