Join us in reading The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov this January!

I've never started a group read before, so if you have suggestions just let me know--especially time-line and how to avoid spoilers for people.

I read this last year and suggest you discuss which translation you will be reading. This link, Bulgakov's Master and Margarita, was posted on carlos mcrey's thread which I thought was a good resource.

Welcome!
Thanks avatiakh! I'm sure it will be very helpful.

katelisim -- it's a good idea to have separate threads for spoilers (with a caution in the subject line) and non-spoilers.

Link wasn't working for me just now but I am interested in the January group read. I have the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.

Hellos and welcomes, and all that business ;)
My copy is translated by: Diana Burgin & Katherine Tiernan O'Connor.

I missed this when it was originally posted.

I've got a copy in the TBR so I will join in too. Not sure which translation, but I suspect it is the Burgin and O'Conner one.

I'll give it a go with the Glenny translation.

This will be my first group read ever!

I don't have a great track record with group reads, but I'm going to try it again. I attempted this book last year on my own and wasn't able to get through it alone. I'll be reading the Penguin Classics edition translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky. Looking forward to this!

Hello all. It's getting close to January :)
Just wondering how everyone wanted to do this. I'm thinking of having 3 threads going. A general spoiler-free discussion, half 1 w/ spoilers, and half 2 with spoilers. Thoughts? Are half chunks too big to discuss? I thought maybe thirds or quarters, but I don't want to bog down the group page too much--if that is one of those unwritten etiquettes.

However you set it up is fine by me. Looking forward to reading it--although I may not begin until the second week of January.

I just got a copy with the translation by Pevear and Volokhonsky. That has me doing two group reads for January, but I still think I'd like to give it a go. (Katelisim, totally open to however you want to set it up.)

I don't know about the group etiquette, but as for me (a non-participant this time around), I'm happy to click the little Xs at the top of any threads that are irrelevant to me so that I no longer see them. It may still be against the etiquette, but you have at least one non-participant fine with chunks smaller than halves. :)

#16 I don't know about "unwritten etiquette", but I'd prefer smaller chunks. One of the reasons I bogged down and didn't finish the book last year was because there was so many questions in my mind as I read and no one to talk about them with.

I read it a little over a year ago, and I agree with Sandy that more threads would be good. There's just so much going on that needs to be discussed! I was fortunate to have 1 friend (who gave it to me) to talk to about it, but wish I could have done a group read.

I don't plan to re-read it, but I do remember quite a lot, and intend to follow your discussions... and maybe get some of the puzzles solved...

Thanks guys! I figured halves were too big. It's good to know that several threads won't be too bothersome. For those who have fully or partially read it already, do you have any suggested breaking points for discussion? Otherwise I will just randomly divide and hope for the best :)

We are set to go once January hits! All the threads have been made. 1 spoiler-free, 4 with spoilers. There's a nice long bit in the spoiler-free one, and just silly filler in the others for now. The first couple of days in January are a little hectic every year, so I figured better to do it now :)

If I forgot anything, please let me know (except that I forgot "spoiler" in a title, already saw it *le sigh)

Spoiler-free thread here

January's here! Make sure to stop into the spoiler-free thread linked in post #23. To start some general chatter: When are you starting, what do you expect, etc, etc?
