for some people, these mean the same thing... for people like me, they can be separate lists.

there are some authors who i list as my favorite, but i don't own everything they've ever written and don't even aspire to. perhaps it's because some of them have been around for so long that i appreciate a newer or older style more... or that there are so many volumes to collect that it just becomes unwieldy in the face of all other titles to collect.

there are some authors whose works i just buy impulsively as soon as they're out without even checking what the story could be about. perhaps i just find them to be fairly "safe" authors.. as in, i know what to expect from them.. even if my expectations for them are not necessarily as high. (ie, i know i'm getting fluff wen i'm looking for it)

favorite authors whose works i do impulse buy:
- tsuda masami (author of kare kano... who seems to like writing around the theme of being true to oneself/finding out their real selves)
- nakahara aya (author of lovely complex... always cute, always funny.. although some of her older stories kinda make me go "wut"... she always puts her characters in the silliest situations)
- saitou rin (author of sekai wa minna boku no tame.... there's just always a different "feel" about her manga, although a lot of the basis is typical shoujo plot points)
- hidaka banri (author of i hate you more than anyone!... i've been hooked since this series.. although some of her newer stories are getting more and more sickeningly sweet XD)
- taamo (author of wagahai wa yome de aru... who writes mostly short stories, but i just love them for their simplicity)
- nakamura yoshiki (author of skip beat!... always funny XD;)
- mitsuki kako (author of ai hime... a newer favorite.. but i'm finding that i like her style)

favorite authors whose works i'm more discriminate about...
- yazawa ai (author of nana... probably mostly because of the whole "too long, too many" excuse)
- mizusawa megumi (author of hime-chan no ribbon... same reason)
- clamp (you know who they are... same reason + styles are too different between works, so i evaluate every time)

authors whose works i always impulsively buy without checking synopses, but are not necessarily favorites:
- enjouji maki (author of hapi mari.... writes a lot of fluff for slightly more mature audiences.. i'm disappointed at times, but i still grab her stuff)
- yamada komomo (author of otona no jikan... same reason? XD;)

who are yours?

sorry my list is quite long (i actually have a few more authors that are borderline for that second list.. since i always check out their works eventually, more because i pretty much consider them to be classic - ie, obana miho, yoshizumi wataru, etc...)... also, mine is also all shoujo.. ^^;

I will buy anything, ANYTHING, by Tachibana Kaimu. I love her art, I enjoy her sense of humor, and we seem to like the same sorts of things in our stories. The only thing of hers that I'm aware is available in English is Pieces of a Spiral.

I also will buy anything by Tanemura Arina. She likes the plot twist, but once you keep reading her, she gets a little predictable. I don't care though - I still love Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, and her art, while a little weird. Is very pretty in its own stylized way.

I will also buy everything by Takaya Natsuki, even though I haven't read all of it yet. I have faith in her plotting and her commitment to character.

I used to try everything by Yoshizumi Wataru, but as I got older I had even less tolerance for teen melodrama. I still think she can be really funny, and I loved Minto na Bokura and I enjoyed Ultra Maniac. I haven't read anything after that though. (If she's got something new and funny out, let me know!)

I used to buy all CLAMP, but got really annoyed by the hiatus of my favorite shoujo titles, and then never read TRC or xxxHolic because of my annoyance. I got most of TRC in a lot sale, and I think I'm done holding a grudge, so maybe reading it will renew my love. I'm not sure why I like CLAMP though because the stories sometimes aggravate me a lot, and I tend to not care for anything shounen they've done, but sometimes you don't know exactly why you're attracted to something.

I honestly haven't been reading much manga the last couple of years so I wonder which other authors if I see them I would buy on sight? Maybe I should go to the bookstore and find out!

i've heard a few people having tachibana kaimu as a favorite author, but i don't think i've ever tried anything by her... i should probably check out her works. :3

tanemura arina was borderline for me. i think i stopped getting her stuff halfway through full moon, and only ever got one volume of shinshi doumei cross. (then again, i was kinda trying to kick the high-volume-manga-purchases habit at the time, too..) i really like her art, too. but, yeah.. she seems to really like plots that involve attachment and betrayal.

takaya natsuki, i get the first volume of her works.. then kinda forget about them when i get involved with others... sadly. XD

mint na bokura was my absolute favorite by yoshizumi wataru! i wasn't too interested in ultra maniac when it was coming out, though.. maybe i should check that out, too. she was also borderline for me... and i've only started picking up all of her stuff again. she started delving into stories for older audiences. you should check out cherish (one volume, involving a girl with two gay dads who meets her ex-bf in college).. it's pretty sweet, actually... and spicy pink (which seems partly based on her life.. a mangaka who meets a guy at a goukon)... although i honestly can't remember if there was any huge drama in that one, the story really only lasts 2 volumes. stay away from cappuccino, if you don't like the un-funny. that DEPRESSED me for quite a while. o_______o

definitely agree with you on the comments about CLAMP. they stay on my list, but i don't even know why sometimes. XD;

thanks for sharing your faves. i'm definitely curious about what puts authors on people's lists. :)

I will buy anything by Naoki Urasawa. He is a master storyteller but it is a shame that not much of his works are available in English. He doesn't seem to be appreciated outside Japan.

Banri Hidaka: I love almost all her works and my favorites would be V.B.Rose and Seikai de Ichiban Daikirai. I want more of her works to be licensed.

Natsuki Takaya: I wouldn't say I love all her works but I loved Fruits Basket and I am still hoping for her latest, Hoshi wa Utau to get licensed.

Miki Aihara: One of my favorite mangakas and I would definitely buy every title of hers. Hot Gimmick and Honey Hunt are my favorites. If only she will continue Honey Hunt soon. Hopefully her "From five to nine" will be licensed too.

Mitsuru Adachi: I will get anything by this manga artist. I am a huge fan of Touch. I am currently reading Cross Game and I am glad that VIZ licensed it. Now if only they will acquire Touch as well.

Yoshiki Nakamura: I am a big fan of Skip Beat!, though I cannot say I read any of her other works. I would love to read Tokyo Crazy Paradise, though.

Makoto Tateno: For both her shoujo and BL titles.

Yoko Kamio: As a big fan of Hana yori Dango, I want to read more of her works especially Cat Street.

CLAMP: I am fully aware that not all their works are that great but I am always reading to check out their new and latest stuff. I love both xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-.

Youka Nitta: For her great BL titles. I will grab just about anything by her.

Ai Yazawa: Love how her stories are unpredictable and not your typical shoujo.

hidaka banri ♥. she just started a new series about the next generation sugimoto and honjou.. and it makes me squee since sekakira is also a fave. are the rest of her akiyoshi family series licensed?

i think i've only read the *cough*studentteacher*cough* series by aihara miki in full.. but am trying to get and read the titles you mentioned. i think i keep getting her confused with another author, which is why i keep skipping over her series. XD;;

adachi!!! he's my absolute favorite shounen author... but i own NOTHING by him. huh. i love touch as well. :)

nakamura yoshiki's tokyo crazy paradise is also an absolute favorite of mine. there used to be a website on geocities that translated (not scanslated) every single chapter as they came out... but, unfortunately, losing geocities meant all of that was lost. you might like blue wars by her, as well.

Sadly, only Seikai de Ichiban Daikirai was licensed from the Akiyoshi family series but again, only 9 volumes have been published as CMX shut down. :( I hope some other company picks it up or at least publish the rest of the series.

I know about her new series Tenshi 1/2 Houteishiki. Is the boy by any chance the son of Sugimoto and Kazuha?

spoiler warning

(too bad we can't really change the font styles here to make spoilers more hidden....)

only 3-4 chapters are out. the main focus is 2nd year student from outside their family... but their son (1st year student), mana, does take an interest in her. you also see their daughter (3rd year student), hina.. as well as tooru and senko's daughter, michiru.

Sounds interesting. I so want this to be licensed.

Off-topic: Do you only read Japanese manga? Don't you read in English too?

7> You should be able to change the fonts some. testing for color change...

There are a lot of HTML options available, though some are blocked for security purposes and to keep things from breaking too much. I think color, at least, is possible?

EDIT: nope, apparently not. the "font" and "span" tags aren't allowed. You can do strikethrough, though. And blockquote.
testing blockquote color change...

But, anyway, there's strikethrough. I found the old thread about blocking certain HTML and it says CSS is no-go, which I'd forgotten.

ya... i also love how she focuses on a specific 'vocation' or what-not for most of her series... this one looks like it'll be focusing on make-up.. XD;

off-topic... i mostly read in japanese.. ^^; reading is translation and interpretation hand-in-hand for me... and i don't like losing things in translation. (i could go on, but i'll try not to talk too much XD). it's also cheaper.. and i actually do like reading as they come out. there are only a few things i read in english.. usually they're (1) the ones i can't get in japanese very easily anymore, (2) the ones that aren't available in japanese {ie, what little manhwa i find interesting XD}. i really only collect blade of the immortal, gunnm, and karekano {which i wouldn't mind getting in all languages} - and goong - in english..

>9 keristars:
i wish they at least had a way to hide spoilers that was available to forum posters... for a site about books, spoilers are bound to appear here and there.

Ultra Maniac isn't nearly as good as Minto na Bokura, but I was amused enough by it when it was running in Ribon. If I recall (because I only read it once, unlike MnB which I've read like 234 million times) it strayed into love-square territory pretty quickly, but it was cute. It's not that I want to read funny manga specifically, it's just that she's so over the top sometimes that I can't take her seriously and at least if it's funny I can laugh along, you know?

Tachibana Kaimu is... well, I don't even know which series to suggest to a first time reader. Honestly, I don't even recall which I read first, and 'read' is putting it nicely because I discovered her early when learning Japanese and there was no furigana. In general her works tend to hint m/m and have strong reincarnation and/or dual identity themes. When she's being funny she likes to be a little absurd and overdramatic, but in a good way. I think Tokumu Sentai Shinesman (her most famous, I think) is HYSTERICALLY funny (especially if you get the meta jokes), but then it's also really serious and poignant at the same time. I only wish the ending was stronger. All in all I think that's my favorite series of hers, followed by Data and Rasen no Kakera. She hits my buttons, I will not deny.

This is a fun thread. Hearing everyone talk about Sekai de Ichiban Daikirai makes me want to try it!

I'll read, and if I had the money buy, everything I could find by Chika Shiomi and Mick Takeuchi. I've found that I like everything I've seen by them so far.

ribon ♥ yeah.. she seems to like having geometrical shapes in love mapping. her newer stuff seem to run on the shorter side, so the geometry is on the low.. but i haven't checked out her newest series (chitose, etc) yet.

you've got me intrigued on tachibana kaimu's themes! i'll try to see if they have shinesman (the title already sounds fun) at our bookstore, but i think we're low on futabasha titles. thanks for the recommendation. :) (i guess, if anything, there's the intarwebs ^^; )

i wonder how you'll like sekakira. it's pretty much shoujo slice of life with the vocational stuff. i didn't think it would be this popular, with all the other series that are out in english. i think i'm rather biased towards it since it was one of the first stories i latched onto when i started reading hty. (back when there were 3-4 gender bender series running on it... lol.)

>12 Jenson_AKA_DL:
never tried mick takeuchi.. but, as for chika.. i only know about yurara and rasen (and i like how there's a crossover character).. are her other stories much in the same vein?

> follow-up to 5
just remembered.. it's takada rie that i think about when i think of hot gimmick, for some reason... absolutely NO idea why.

>Chika Shiomi also has the series Night of the Beasts which is another I have yet to finish but have really enjoyed the first five volumes.

Everything from Kakinouchi Narumi! I just love her drawing style. The stories are nice too, I think. And she has many short series (a few volumes each) or one-book series.

Oddly enough I don't think that I currently own more then one series by an author. I have lots of favorite series, but I don't tend to pay too much attention to the authors.

This will shortly change, since I know that for Christmas I will be receiving Stepping on Roses. The author, Rinko Ueda, wrote one of my favorite series Tail of the Moon.
