La mia biblioteca

Used to buy books at the drop of a hat. Finally reality set in along with a budget. Now I focus on developing a Wishlist, researching titles/reviews and searching out hard cover versions (if possible). Own a fair number of paperbacks with the ideal goal of eventually swapping to hard covers.

I did some back and forth on inclusion of audio books in my LT Library or not. As a quasi-bibliophile, I value a book in my hands. But recently I have really come to like selected audio books and have listened to some very good books that I might not have otherwise read or purchased in hard copy form. So I determined the best way to track audio books is thru an audio book List. This allows for overlaps between my lists.

If you look at my collection and LT published reviews, you will note that I have a focus on WWII generals and leaders. If it is not obvious, I believe that Marshall was almost a superman. Very interesting learning about his subordinates and how they all interacted during the war (and prior).

I tried to match the shown book covers to the exact book I own. Where I could not find them on Amazon or elsewhere, I scanned in the covers.

Informazione su di me

My library tags so far probably describe my interests best. Years trying to enter USNA only to get into my 2nd choice. My allegiance to topics naval and military is my way of balancing out things not accomplished. 16 years living at the rural OR coast 50 miles away. Now in suburbia (with many more bookstores to browse). Love that any book can be found and acquired online, but realize that the web can not replace the thrill of the hunt in a good bookstore. A very satisfying day... roaming Powell's City of Books in downtown Portland.

My latest interest... I enjoy data visualization. The opportunity to see how information can presented graphically. Some amazing examples out there. I find Napoleon's March To, and Retreat From, Moscow by Charles Joseph Minard fascinating and probably the single source spark to my interest in the topic. The one subject I would love to capture in a custom graphic poster is the world of US Army Divisions in World War II. I have seem some sharp graphics out there, but think I can better those. Thus a lot of my recent reading is focusing on summaries of division histories, WW2 order of battle and history of the Army from circa 1939 into the war. Just now finding some very interesting books detailing the Louisiana Maneuvers and how army officers got plucked from obscurity to advancement in the flag officer ranks.

A hidden jewel: Robert's Bookshop in Lincoln City, OR. Worth a stop if cruising down the coast.

Reality checks...

"If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, it's just possible you haven't grasped the situation."

"To profit from good advice requires more wisdom that to give it."

Sun-Tzu's Dictum of Refrain: Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

"Idealism increases in direct proportion to one's distance from the problem."

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt." - Abraham Lincoln

"A problem well stated is a problem half solved."

"You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him." - Audrey Hepburn
