I love to read, but with three kids, it's hard to find the time. In fact, for quite a long time -- since my first child was born almost fourteen years ago, to be precise -- I had a hard time reading any books at all. Chalk it up to difficulty in finding 10 straight minutes in which to do anything without interruption. Then I got pregnant with #3 and the doctor said to take it easy. I took that as license to sit on the couch and do nothing other than read for hours at a time. And, voila! Back to reading full force! I can't quite keep up with my pre-baby (now toddler) pace of 1-2 books/day, but I've always got at least one book going.
These days, my tastes run towards fluffy chick lit, mysteries, and, my new passion, well written romance. Since much of my reading takes place as I drift off to sleep, anything that *doesn't* freak me out is up my alley. Even from way back when, however, I have to admit that I tend to stay away from anything that makes me think too much or cry. I figure I do more than enough of that without having a book make me do it; no need for any extra help on that front!
In terms of ratings, I have a pretty straightforward system: 5 stars is anything I can't put down. (Or, if I am forced to, that I spend all my time scheming how I can get back to it.) It doesn't mean that everything is technically perfect, although a 5-star book is usually pretty high up there on the technical scale, or else I'd be distracted by the flaws. But I'm more apt to give a romance 5 stars than anything on the literary fiction best seller list. I don't want to think; I just want to enjoy. I tend to give a lot of 4's because that means it's engaging enough to keep me reading. A 3.5 is something that I generally will keep reading, but these are often the books that sit around for awhile because I'm just not into them that much. Rarely will you see a 3 or below, because those are the ones I start but am hard-pressed to finish. I will occasionally post those books because I've enjoyed some from later in the series and want to be sure to keep track.
