I've been reading crime fiction for over 30 years. I started, fortuitously, with a Ross Macdonald novel, devoured him, Chandler and Hammett for years, followed by private eye writers like early Robert B. Parker, early Sara Paretsky, any Robert Crais. Also enjoy procedurals, especially Harry Bosch, early Patricia Cornwell. I like Noir--my current stars include Ken Bruen, Dennis Lehane, Marcus Sakey,Jason Starr, Dave Zeltserman -- and the edgier Brits: Mark Billingham, Christopher Brookmyre,Ian Rankin, Denise Mina. I like Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels, Deon Meyer's South African books, any Jack Reacher novel, Charles Willeford, Canadians Giles Blunt, Linwood Barclay and Howard Shrier, and any good, edgy crime fiction. All time favourite: Elmore Leonard edges out Ross Macdonald, who hasn't held up quite as well. Leonard carved out the most singular, exciting and unique voice in crime fiction for nearly 40 years. Covered many different places with ease. Virtually all standalones. Even his Westerns are great. No one else like him. I also read many other kinds of fiction, non fiction,magazines, newspapers, blogs, the backs of cereal boxes...
