- = Deeply flawed book. Kudos to the author for the effort taken to publish a book, any book, but this one is not ready for the light of day.
= Story or information is flawed in one or more aspects, but book has some mildly redeeming qualities.
= Meh. An okay book, mildly entertaining or informative, but no aspect of the book is significantly interesting. Borrow from the library.
= Book has one or more significantly well-done aspects. Buy this book.
= Excellent book! Must read!
My library started when I was about five years old and fell in love with dog stories (particularly by Jim Kjelgaard) and horse stories (Black Beauty was my favorite.) I kept all of those books.
Then, in grade school, I discovered the intrigue of history, particularly about the Civil War and the Second World War. My library grew in that direction. Then science fiction took hold of my imagination and I couldn't buy books fast enough. Of course, some fantasy crept in there during the same period.
Then I went to college and majored in English as an undergrad and Linguistics in grad school. My library started to become respectable in quality as well as size, adding literature, philosophy and science. But I just couldn't live with only 'good' books - mysteries and spy thrillers as well began to take up sizable space on my shelves!
When I moved to Africa to teach Linguistics in a university, much of my library was given away - the books cost too much to ship and I didn't know when or if I would return. The books that most intrigued me I kept in storage, but inexorably my library grew anyway - this time with a slew of books on languages and on travel and the many countries I lived in or visited.
When computers became available my library grew again with many books on operating systems, AI and programming languages. And, as I moved around in the world, more books got thrown out or given away or lent out and never returned. And more of all the earlier types and genres continued to be added (except the dog and horse stories. I seem to have moved on from those.)
So now I have a hodge-podge of a collection! And that's not even counting the scads of books I have on cooking, photography, bonsai, music, art and religion - the activities that give shape and joy to my life (besides reading!) - Informazione su di me
Retired from two careers: university teacher of undergraduate English and Linguistics, and subsequently a software engineer focusing on AI, real-time Unix, and distributed operating systems. In the course of my careers I have lived in Africa, Europe and North America and have visited over 40 different countries. I now satisfy my creative impulses mostly through reviewing books, learning to play classical guitar, cultivating bonsai, cooking and wildlife photography. Really, to know about me, though, check out my library. It's a much more faithful mirror of my life and who I am than my brief career synopsis!
