Carter's library is being cataloged from an inventory made of the collection by Philip Vickers Fithian in 1774-75, as well as from Carter's probate inventory.

Robert "Councillor" Carter III (February 1728 - 10 March 1804), Virginia planter and local official. In 1791 he began a manumission of his ~500 slaves, which became the largest known release of slaves prior to the Civil War.
