- Cuthbert Bullitt (c. 1740 - 1791), Virginia planter, lawyer, and statesman. The son of Benjamin and Sarah (Harrison) Bullitt. He married Helen Scott in 1761; the couple had six children.
Bullitt's plantation, Mount View, was located at the junction of Quantico Creek and the Potomac River.
Bullitt became a member of Prince William County's Committee of Safey and represented the county at the 1776 provincial congress. Under the revolutionary constitution he was appointed Commonwealth Attorney (prosecutor) for Prince William County, a position he held until he was appointed to the state court in 1780. In 1788 he was a delegate to the state ratifying convention for the federal Constitution; he voted against ratification.
Cuthbert Bullitt shot and killed Virginia Burgess John Baylis in a duel on 24 September 1765. Baylis had insulted Bullitt's brother-in-law, 18-year old John Scott, and Scott requested Bullitt to deliver a challenge. Bullitt attempted to settle the dispute, but Baylis opened fire, and Bullitt returned fire, mortally wounding Baylis. He was acquitted on grounds of self-defense. Documents pertaining to the duel can be read here. - Luogo
