The Amalienborg Prize, which is awarded by the Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik Foundation (the wedding foundation, founded in 1967), was established to encourage outstanding Danish humanists to mostra altro continue publishing books of general interest in Danish.

The money does not go to the author, but is used to have one of the author's books published in one of the main languages. The first award of DKK 100,000 took place in 1972. The prize cannot be applied for, but is awarded by the foundation after obtaining opinions from specialised experts. The prize is awarded at varying intervals. Margrethe II is the chair of the prize. Prince Henrik is the only member of the board.

The Amalienborg Medal, which was created by Mogens Bøggild (1901 - 1987) in 1983, goes to the prize winners.
