Le bouddhisme est comme une demeure pleine de trésors, avec des pratiques pour obtenir le bonheur des vies futures, la félicité de la libération et le bonheur suprême de l'éveil... mais savoir distinguer le Dharma du non-Dharma est la clé qui permet d'accéder à tous ces trésors. Peu importe ce que nous savons de la vacuité, des chakras ou du contrôle de notre énergie vitale par le yoga de la koundalini, tout cela ne sert à rien sans cette compréhension essentielle de la façon de pratiquer le Dharma, de corriger nos actions.
Un grand nombre de personnes s'illusionnent et gâchent leur vie tout entière à étudier les aspects les plus ésotériques du bouddhisme, sans jamais comprendre le point le plus fondamental : la distinction entre ce qui est Dharma et ce qui ne l'est pas. Il est très facile de s'adonner à des activités du Dharma telles que réciter des mantras, dire des prières, faire des offrandes et des choses de ce genre avec la pensée des huit préoccupations mondaines.
Cela arrive. Mais en réalité, le Dharma sacré, qui inclut toutes ces activités, signifie en fait renoncer à cette vie. C'est pourquoi le Dharma sacré et le dharma mondain ne peuvent jamais être pratiqués en même temps. Personne ne peut faire ces deux choses en même temps : renoncer à cette vie et rechercher le bonheur de cette vie en obéissant aux huit préoccupations mondaines. Nous pouvons pratiquer l'un, puis l'autre, mais jamais les deux ensemble dans un même esprit, au même moment.
