Part romance, part mystery, this well-written story centers around a young couple who have just started courting, at the end of the 19th century in a small town in Massachusetts. Heavily influenced by the changing attitudes sparked by the Industrial Revolution, the novel provides a glimpse into the different classes of the town, from the hardworking maids who are always in the know about what goes on behind-the-scenes, to the merchants in town who have their ears to the ground and their eyes to their shop windows. Rich with detail, I found myself quickly drawn into this historical novel with it's easy flow of text, and hints at hidden truths. While I found myself easily enjoying the colorful descriptions and cozy aspects to the story, the gradual build to a shocking conclusion proves that you cannot always judge a book by its cover. Gossipy prattle and late 19th Century activism. Not for me. Didn't finish - only made it 8% of the way through.

This is not a hurried and harried novel, but one that wants to be read when you are in a relaxed state and don't want to be challenged by any more of current reality. It is set in a time which is far from some of today's madness yet shows that in some ways we haven's progressed quite as far as we think we have. I thought it was very good but was rather slow at the beginning.
I won an e-book copy in a LibraryThing Giveaway!
