This was a free ebook on Kobo, and it took a long time for me to get around to starting this, and a pretty long time to read it. Although full disclosure, I only read it on my phone every now and then while sitting in my car waiting to go in to work in the mornings. This was an alright book for being free...other free books by various authors left a little (or a lot, as the case may be) to be desired. I do not have high expectations for free books. However, this one had some interesting things going on, and it moved relatively quickly. The time frame for the entire book is pretty tight, but in that span of time Tish has TWO men fall desperately in love with her (don't we all wish we could have that lol). There were definitely times where I was a little bit lost when it came to Tish and her Grams. A few times I had to read sections over again, and still didn't really understand. You don't get the full picture until the end, so don't feel bad if you think you're missing something. A murder mystery is always a great storyline, especially when there are numerous suspects but nothing makes sense.

I have seen other reviews about this being "Christian fiction" and honestly, if I hadn't seen those reviews before I read this, it wouldn't have even occurred to me that this fell in that category (sidenote: I didn't know that was actually a category). Yes, there are mentions of church and God sprinkled throughout the novel, and it gets a little more heavy-handed towards the end, but I don't think it was overpowering or took away from the rest of the story at all. Truthfully, I am not Christian and don't believe in God but the mentions in this book weren't so overt that it made me feel as if the writer was trying to push her ideals onto me. I had no issues at all reading those sections. Everyone has beliefs, and even though mine don't match the ones in the book, I am openminded enough to not be offended when I read about someone else's issues. If you are concerned about the so-called religious aspect of this particular novel, don't be.

All in all, a relatively cute little murder mystery with a little bit of love thrown in. If you like knights in shining armor or comeback stories, then by all means give this one a try. I don't believe I currently own any of the rest of the series, but I may look for them down the line...the story did end with kind of a cliffhanger...maybe.

I wanted to like this but, as many people stated it felt as though the story had very good potential but, no real outline. It started out great but, fizzled soon after I found myself rushing to get to the next page because I was bored out of my mind. I thought that Tish was so wishy washy and while I understood her reasons it was a little to much for me. I think that one should question those around them but, not fall in love, be scared of them, etc all in a little time. This book just was okay for me.

Tish is renovating an old Victorian house in the small town Rawlings, not far from Detroit. This fixer-upper should make her a big profit when she resells it.

Romance is in the air with two attractive neighbors vying for her affection. But, Tish is off-balance as she hears voices where they can't be then a body shows up in her basement.

What is going on in this sleepy town?

A suspenseful read as I tried to understand Tish, and the different relationships in Rawlings.Christian fiction.… (altro)

What a shame it is to have to give a two star review to a book with potential. Tish is someone I truly wanted to like. A home restoration specialist, she has a good life after a horrific youth. Moving into a run-down Victorian to restore it, she finds herself surrounded by truly strange townspeople, missing women, and a possible ghost haunting her house. Being a home restoration nut myself, I thought this would be a great little book to read, especially as it was a mystery with a paranormal slant. Sounds great right? Uh. Not. So. Much. Truthfully? I was being generous giving it two stars on Amazon. If it weren’t a freebie, I would have asked for my money back. Honestly, I kept reading it hoping it would get better. Instead, it wound up circling the drain, and I kept reading simply because it was like watching a fifty-car pileup on highway 70 during a snowstorm.

Our erstwhile heroine immediately meets the Brit expat from two houses down, then the cop from the house behind her and down one, and both of them immediately fall for her, frizzy hair, Goodwill reject clothes and all. This when the Brit is rebounding from a marriage to a centerfold beautiful woman no less.

After knowing the Brit for a total of “about three hours” he asks her to marry him . . and she goes over to his house to accept the very next day to accept, having fallen in love with him when, as before stated, they have known each other for about three hours and had one dinner together. Something should have set the red lights off, right? Riiiight…. The cop is, of course, crazy about her also, and she was just with him the night before fantasizing about being married to him and having kids, then the next day she decides she is in love with the Brit and is fantasizing about being married to him? That immediately had me rolling my eyes . . .

Then there is the “body in the cistern” aspect – (this is the part I was really hoping to have fun with . . . buzzzz!) If she really thinks there is a body in there, why doesn’t she get off her backside and break apart the concrete? Especially when yet another body, that of the historical society leader who refused to let her remove the cistern shows up in the cistern (dead) – and she is sent to jail for the murder. Then immediately starts running for his position once she is out of jail? Her whole attitude is deeply bipolar and totally bizarre.

This is a “Christian Romance” sort of thing, which I didn’t know when I picked it up. I tried to keep that out of my thought processes with the story line, but even that was over the top unbelievable. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes so hard that I gave myself a headache.

As I said, I truly wanted to like this book, based on the ghost story, of course, but I wanted very much to like Tish based on what she had been through in her life and what she has accomplished since that time. Sadly, poor writing, overwrought story lines, and I was disappointed to realize that I truly couldn’t care less what happens to her from this point on. She is simply too bipolar and creepy to be likable.
