V. M. Yeates (1897–1934)

Air fighting in France during WW1. Royal Flying Corps. Fragile aircraft, open cockpit, being shot at and, worst of all, no parachutes. Excellent first-person account.

Perhaps the finest book on the combat pilot's experience that I've ever read. Certainly makes one want to quote Sherman, "War is hell." I think this book would be incredibly valuable to those seeking to gain insight into WWI's war in the air as it particularly captures terminology, techniques, and the daily routines of the pilots.
