Drawing upon court proceedings from Tudor England, which are presented along with relevant texts of magical texts, the authors are able to empirically conclude several points: First, despite popular imagination, men were as likely as women to be involved in working magic; and second, the persons were in court less for working magic than for being socially disruptive (thieving, fraud, etc.), suggesting that there was no concerted effort to police magic specifically.
