I read this book because I thought I'd enjoy the subject matter (Mothman stuff) and in that sense it's pretty compelling. However, the writing is clunky and it's clearly AU fanfic and not an edited novel. Not that this is a bad thing, just don't go into it expecting to be wowed by the prose.

Point Pleasant is an interesting read!

Set in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, this novel introduces to men who used to be the best of friends and the monster that terrorized them one summer morning. Ben Wiseheart, now an accomplished horror writer, returns to his hometown to try to fix the slump he's in. He encounters his ex-friend--Nicholas Nolan--the reason he left. Nicholas is now a respected member of the community and tries to deny the event of their childhood that shaped Ben's career. In the midst of their troubled reconciling, there are more and more sightings of the monster that haunts the town--the Mothman. Ben and Nicholas must race the clock as they try to save their town from the terror that is coming.

Initially a horror story, Point Pleasant is also a realistic romance with two male leads. With a backdrop of the town's history, this novel reads with an astonishing realism. Point Pleasant will make you lie awake at night, peering out your windows, but you won't regret it. Jen Archer Wood is a talented writer with an authentic feel for the horror genre.

The first time I read Point Pleasant was back when it was "only" a fanwork, and it was amazing.
Now, almost a year later, I'm reading a complete, independent, breathtaking book full of surprises.
The thing that's so amazing about PP is the way it gets under your skin. With most books, you read, you sympathise, you find something that you can relate to, and then you close it, it lets you go. Point Pleasant doesn't work this way. Every single character will make themselves comfortable in your head and continue living on their own. You cry, and laugh, and dream, and love with them, and after you close the book, they won't leave you. They are so very real it's almost frightening. They will make you giggle like a first grader. They will rip your heart out.

I'm not very good with words, but I don't really need them now: the book speaks for itself.
Make sure to take your time and enjoy Svetlana's wonderful illustrations (I do recommend the colour companion).

Overall — 11 out of 10, will read again.

I don’t believe that anything I could write would ever do Point Pleasant any justice. I know it wouldn’t. But I loved this story so much before and I love it even more now. On my second read through of it, I found myself responding almost involuntarily. I got chills at the exact same spots. I cried at the exact same spots. As melodramatic as it may sound, I even clutched my chest at the same points as I did when I first read Point Pleasant. The characters are wonderfully human and the story is incredibly and terrifyingly engaging. I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoiling anything for those that haven’t read it, but I do want to say that this story takes on a life of its own. It makes you feel right along with the characters. As I was reading, there was never a doubt in my mind that these characters were real people and that I was being allowed to share in their experiences in such a cathartic way. I don’t believe I could ever be the way I was before I read Point Pleasant. Yeah sure, that sounds a little overzealous and maybe a little corny, but it is true. A good story is one that pulls at your emotions the whole way through, and when it is over, it becomes a part of you. Point Pleasant became one of those stories for me, and I hope everyone else will give it a chance and be able to take something away from it as much as I have.… (altro)
