I'm a big fan of Willingham's Fables graphic novel series, but this Angel installment didn't even come close to the normal quality of his work. There were still a few fun moments, like Ilyria requesting permission to seduce Connor but the witty dialogue was mostly absent here. Bring back Bryan Lynch, I say, or someone equally in tune with Joss Whedon's style.

This book weighs a thousand pounds. I don't recommend it as a book to stuff in your tote bag when you hit the beach. It includes volumes I've already rated, the last three installments in the Angel series. I wasn't very impressed with the storyline or scripts for these, and I rated them individually as 2 stars. The one-shots at the end, plus the artwork throughout, bumped the rating for this collection up to 3 stars. Those last several stories were worth the read.

The last one of these Angel comics that I really enjoyed was The Last Angel in Hell. I stuck with the to the end, hoping to be dazzled again, but that never really happened once Brian Lynch stopped writing the series.… (altro)

It was all right. Sure, closing a hellmouth with the help of a devil is fun and all, but what can I say? It's all been done before in buffyverse. I really want the characters to look more like themselves, too. I'd read this only if you're a die-hard completionist like me.

Mentor and Rookie Superhero Tale
Review of the author's crowdfunded pdf edition (2020)

Rounded down from [3.5]
I read Punchline: Blood Sisters as a perk from the recent Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for Punchline: Super Frenemies.

The story has a good premise with one superhero hanging up her cape (so to speak) and being able to transfer her abilities to a teenager who expresses interest in taking up the job. The superhero capability transfer happens via a blood transfer hence the subtitle of the book. This is a world where several superheroes exist openly but still with secret identities. There is tension in the mentor and rookie learning relationship and due to some uncertainty in the motives of the mentor.

The downsides were perhaps slight but were enough to bother me a bit. The art work at various points blacks out portions of the face of the mentor especially in ways that give them a skull-like look i.e. two big black shapes for eyes, a droopy tear shaped black drop for a nose. This just looked odd and creepy. Perhaps it is intended to foreshadow some dark intentions in the future, but for a hero figure it was simply odd.

The other downside was that the big-bad in this 5 comic book cycle was a character named "Sawtooth" which was exactly like the character named "King Shark" in the Flash TV series where they appeared periodically from Season 2 (2015-16) onwards i.e. a shark headed bodied creature on humanoid legs. That just seemed like a cheap steal in a 2019 book.

I still enjoyed the book and art overall and look forward to the next installment.
