Lonnie Wheeler was born in 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he worked for several newspapers including the Anderson Independent in South Carolina, the Clarion Ledger in Mississippi, and the Cincinnati Enquirer. He eventually transitioned into magazine mostra altro work and writing books. His fist two books, The Cincinnati Game and Bleachers: A Summer in Wrigley Field, were published in 1988. I looked forward to reading this book about Mr. Bell and enjoyed it. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times when I was young and his kindness made an impression on me. He took out time to talk with my mother and I about his learning the game as a youngster growing up in Mississippi. In the book, sports journalist, Bob Broeg is credited with saying, “Cool Papa Bell was a noble man, an elegant man”. That is certainly what I remember about him and it comes through in this wonderful book. :-)… (altro)
