I'm an impatient reader. It's particularly a problem with any historical romance. But this one, with its unusual setting and perfect, world-specific similes, won me over and kept me interested. Great characters, great plot, and I'm about to buy book 2. I'm impressed.
DNF at 14%, having finally realized what the problem was; book 1 didn't end with a couple united against adversity, and book 2 doesn't look any more promising. The stress and anxiety of real life concerns (rising Delta variant numbers in FL, just for one) mean I have little stamina for this kind of story.
I like this author's prose style, and I like the very different time period, and there's nothing wrong with this book. I just can't, right now.
DNF, stopping at 11% primarily because I'm currently running on an empty tank of forgiveness for authors making supposedly smart characters do stupid self-harmful things as a plot device. I know in real life people who are smart do in fact do this, but I can't care when I wanted to read for enjoyment. This book is free, but that doesn't make it worth my time at a point where I have just stopped reading two other books for essentially the same reason.
