I purchased this book at the Brewster Ladies Library Booksale in July of 2014 and it is, by far, the best souvenir I brought home from Cape Cod!
Thoreau tells us, "Cape Cod is the bared and bended arm of Massachusetts: the shoulder is at Buzzards Bay; the elbow, or crazy bone, at Cape Mallebarre; the wrist at Truro; and the sandy fist at Provincetown - behind which the State stands on her guard, with her back to the Green Mountains, and her feet planted on the floor of the ocean, like an athlete protecting her Bay." This book proceeds to remind or introduce the reader as to why Cape Cod is the proud and protective arm that it is.
The first portion of Cape Cod in Color takes the reader through the history of this area with short and concise commentary and includes, Vikings, Wampanoags and Pilgrims - religious freedom and colonization - water mills and windmills - Cape Cod architecture, whales and wars - scrimshaw - salt - railroads and "crane-berries" - farmers of land and sea - Kennedy's, artists and tourists.
Color plates follow with photographs taken from each of Cape Cod's fifteen towns. Each picture confirms the timeless beauty and resilience of this awe inspiring community.
