Ron van der Meer was the first paper engineer to insist that adults could be as fascinated by pop-up books as children. Consequently, his books on specialist subjects such as architecture, music and psychology have been international best-sellers and are collected by fans throughout the world. A flat page of a seemingly normal book can be lifted and turned to reveal the three dimensions of a sailing ship, an orchestra, a volcano or the Sydney Opera House. Van der Meer's background is in graphic design. At college in the early 1970s he found himself veering towards animation, and specialized in the three-dimensional application of toys.He was very much into fiddling and cutting and making things up. In 1978 his life was changed by a small book a friend had brought over from California. Created by Ib Penick, this children¿s pop-up book was simple by today¿s standards, but at the time such a three-dimensional application to paper had never been seen by many people, including van der Meer. He became hooked. Van der Meer approached UK publishers Hamish Hamilton with his own idea for a book. Van der Meer visited Intervisual Publishers in Los Angeles and they took on his idea for Monster Island, a book that ended up selling 300,000 copies and is still selling today. well constructed book which illustrates how film SLR camera's work
Two little nude angels help God create the world. I thought it was cute.
From Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella's castles to the little cottage where Little Red Riding Hood's Grandma lived, to the Gingerbread house found by Hansel & Gretel, this pretty pop-up book displays four different 3 dimensional fairy tale scenes to enjoy. Miniature storybooks are included, and little ones are sure to recognize their favorites. My favorite pop-up is the spread of Cinderella, instantly changing from a poor waif to beautifully dressed woman, thanks to her fairy godmother!

Het Kunstpakket is een veelzijdige inleiding op de westerse beeldende kunst, van de middeleeuwen tot heden.

Het Kunstpakket is een kostbaar speeltje voor de vaders en moeders en ooms en tantes, aan wier hand dochter of neef de wondere wereld der kunsten wordt binnengeleid. Het is een speel- en kijkdoos vol begrijpelijke teksten over abstracte zaken als perspectief en vorm, met tientallen afgedrukte en uitvoerig beschreven kleurenreprodukties van beroemde schilderijen en met pop-ups die tussen de bladzijden smeken om en betast te worden - een flap-uit-boek in optima forma. Alle pop-ups zijn met de hand ingeplakt: met de rest van het boek (inclusief een cassette-bandje met toelichting op 'twintig belangrijke schilderijen' en een kleine 'Kunstwijzer' vol begrippen) geven ze waar voor je geld.
De in Engeland wonende Nederlandse vormgever Ron van der Meer nam het initiatief tot deze multinationale produktie, die in de Verenigde Staten, Groot-Brittannie, Italie, Frankrijk en Nederland verschijnt. Voor Nederland bewerkte Gerard van der Hoek, oud-medewerker Educatieve Afdeling Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam de uitgave.
'The Art Pack', zoals het oorspronkelijk heet, is geschreven voor lezers die belangstelling hebben voor beeldende kunst maar er niet veel van weten. Het is een praktische gids die leert hoe te kijken. Uitgangspunt is de studie van Giovanni Lomazzo, 16e-eeuws Milanees schilder: 'Ideeen voor een Tempel van de Schilderkunst', met als zeven bouwstenen perspectief, licht, kleur, beweging, verhouding, compositie en vorm. Via deze indeling behandelen de auteurs de principes van de schilderkunst om een effect te bereiken: donkere en lichte tinten die schaduw en een driedimensionale vorm in plaats van vlakheid suggereren, schokkende lijnen die op beweging duiden, primaire en secundaire kleuren die sfeer oproepen, enzovoorts. Beeldende kunst presenteren kan alleen op een beeldende manier, vinden de samenstellers. Behalve een wat knullig uitknipbaar mobile om beweging te leren zien en op te plakken snippers om een Matisse-imitatie te maken bevat Het Kunstpakket schitterende opengewerkte schilderijen met opduikende figuren, plastic luikjes met lijnen over afbeeldingen om te zien hoe perspectief wordt bewerkstelligd, een perspectiefkijker met touwtjes als lijnen, een piepkleine vouwbare camera obscura die het vangen van vormen door lichtstralen mogelijk maakt... 'Het Kunstpakket' is een unieke introductie die de gretige kijker van de ene naar de andere verrassing sleurt en met hart en ziel in de ban van de kunsten brengt.… (altro)
