A campy, snarky, clever and really funny treatment of a very complicated, very serious topic. Bryson and Cahill, move aside.

A memoir of the author's time working as a fireman in the Oakland Fire Department. Interesting, though if you have read "Report from Engine Company 82," which came out in the early 1970s, much of what you will read here is familiar. Many different slices of life working as a fireman; one of the best things about the book is the description of the equipment used by firemen, and how the equipment is supposed to work.

To the author, polar bears were the cause celebre, and he wanted to be part of the conversation, so he took his wife and three young kids to Churchill, Manitoba one fall for polar bear season. Churchill is a quirky town, unlike anywhere else, and polar bear advocates descend upon it by the tens of thousands spending tens of thousands of dollars each to view what may be the last of these magnificentl creatures. Because everyone knows the bears are dying. Or are they? There is an ironic undertone to the whole enterprise. This book explores serious issues but is also funny, heartwarming, and eye opening. It is well researched, open-minded, and full of totally unexpected adventure, interesting characters, and human interest. I hope they make a film out of it. I totally loved it. Don't miss this one.… (altro)

The making of a fireman, from entrance exams, 12-week "boot camp", rookie and finally settling at a firehouse. Interesting and eye-opening, told from the first person, this book enforced my realization of just how big a hero being a fireman is.
