This would be a great book to read during Black History Month. It is a biography about the women that helped over 300 slaves escape through the underground railroad.

I really enjoyed this book for many reasons. The main idea of this book is to never give up and to fight for what you believe in. I feel as though this is a really important story. It is an easy read but pulls an extremely heavy topic. Harriet Tubman is an inspiration to so many people throughout history and today. This book covers her hardship as a slave and how she gained her freedom. But the story doesn’t stop there. Once Harriet was a free woman she stands up for what she believed in and sought out to free more slaves. This shows the reader that one person can make a world of difference. I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book. Even though they are not crucial to the story, they provide a sometimes-powerful visual.… (altro)

Summary:
This is a short bibliography of one of America's heroes, Harriet Tubman. She, through overwhelming circumstances outside of her control, went on to save great masses of enslaved individuals during slavery times. This is the story about her life and how she saved herself, then her family, and finally anyone else she could from bondage.

Personal Reaction:
This book is a book with a strong female role which I love. The pictures are done okay but I feel like their could have been a better artistic form throughout the book. I enjoyed this book when I was young and I still do to this day.

Classroom Extension:
1) We could talk about slavery and the underground railroad. We could use this to show how people were treated back then.
2) We could use this as a history lesson and look at the routes that the people took on the underground railroad.
3) We could make our own line and have our own underground railroad by sneaking around outside or down the halls. We could show the students how difficult it would have been to stay hidden.
4) We could divide into the slaves trying to get away and the slave owners and have a scout out in the same way as said before.
5) We could have a debate in class. Choose half the room to support the North and half support the South. Talk about the conflicts about slaves and money and the other issues going on in that time period. Support that side and debate it in groups.
6) We could make our own pictures for the story.
