Breve biografia

Alvin Tresselt Wake Up, Farm!

White Snow Bright Snow Hide and Seek Fog

Born in Passaic, New Jerysey on September 30, 1916, Alvin Tresselt was a pioneer in children's books. With his poetic prose style, he created the "mood" picturebook, which relied not on plot and character but on setting and description. Many of his books were popular with teachers who wished to teach about the environment. From 1946 to 1952, Mr. Tresselt worked in advertising and display graphics. During this time, he began writing children's books. His book, White Snow, Bright Snow, illustrated by Roger Duvoisin, was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1948. In 1952, he became editor of Humpty Dumpty magazine. Later, he was executive editor at Parent's Magazine Press, as well as chief editor of their book imprint. In 1974, he became an instructor and then Dean of Faculty at the Institute of Children's Literature in Redding, Connecticut. He married Blossom Budney, another children's book writer, and they had two daughters.

This is a delightful picture book nature story, telling the story of beavers interacting with other woodland animals, including predators. I appreciate Roger Duvoisin's combined usage of both color and black/white illustrations. The seasons of the year are portrayed in relationship to the beavers building their dams and lodges as well as the author mentioning all of the other woodland animals that enjoy the pond and its water.
For a child that has never had an opportunity to see the work of a beaver, this gentle story gives a good overview of a beaver's life and work. There are a lot of woodland animals and birds to look out for among the pages of this wonderful picture book.… (altro)

A series descriptive vignettes illustrating the essential elements of early morning in a big city environment. No real story in this, but it gives a really nice feel for what it is like in an urban environment.
