graphic nonfiction/graphic journalism (orig. published in French), part 3 of 3 (and yes, you should definitely read all of them) - Hakim and 1-1/2 y.o. old son Hadi are at last reunited with their wife/mother, but not before enduring a lot more hunger and cold, the worst treatment being within anti-immigration Turkey, where they are prohibited from both entering and leaving the country, apparently to be held indefinitely in increasingly overcrowded camps. Some strangers are very helpful (for a price), while others are maybe not to be trusted--it's hard to tell what will be the best decision, but many times there isn't much of a choice anyway.

I really like this series, which, based on many months of interviews with Hakim himself, provides a more thorough look at one Syrian migrant's experiences in eventually getting to a place where his family can be safe, and also eventually being granted refugee status and actual rights. It seems he has tried everything just to support himself and his family, and has endured much worse than any human should ever have to.… (altro)

My Review: A story I think gets too little attention in the sequential-storytelling community. A fact-based story of the dsperation that drives people to abandon homelands that no longer care to, or possess the means to, support them. The horrors of attempting to escape war. The nightmarish way "host" countries treat the newly arrived, often traumatized, families. It does not reflect well on the societies of the countries who have much and wish to share little.

The author/artist clearly went among the people in this precarious situation of being stateless, being unhoused, unwanted, unloved...

...tolerated until something changes, then shunted off to who-knows-where, it might be better, it might be worse, but it isn't here and that's what makes the "host" country happy...

...even if it means you could contract a fatal disease because you're too much trouble to house.

A shameful example before the world, and a problem that will not go away any time soon. Climate refugees are not long behind the displaced people running from the endless wars around the world.

Thinking it through via a well-done, if heavy-handed, graphic novel absolutely can rev up your giftee's empathy gearbox. It can't hurt to try… (altro)

A história do Fabien Toulmé oferece um banho de singeleza, simplicidade, e um misto de sentimentos em relação à paternidade. Com uma honestidade corajosa, Fabien não alivia o seu eu do passado e se revela em toda ignorância e crueldade, para que no avançar das páginas, no correr da vida e na convivência com a sua menininha, passe a ir mudando gradualmente sua opinião e relação com a trissomia.

Essa honestidade, entretanto, é a ascensão e queda do quadrinho; certas passagens, de desenho quase simples, colorido e estilístico, nos pega inesperadamente com uma boa dose de humor negro e bonitas cenas; em outras, a ''honestidade'' exacerbada nulifica a empatia que poderíamos sentir por Toulmé, e uma apatia abate-se sobre a história, com a abordagem levando a lugares-comuns e saídas melodramáticas.

Ao de certa maneira focar a história em si, Toulmé também sacrífica uma melhor versão do quadrinho, com uma participação mais ativa e reativa da esposa, que protagoniza, junto com a filha mais velha, as melhores e mais bonitas cenas da história; assim como as colagens em formas de fotografias familiares, que são, por tabela, também as melhores páginas.

Por consequência da esposa ser Brasileira, e o Toulmé ter morado aqui com ela no Nordeste por um tempo, há sutis referências ao Brasil, que são, inesperadamente, muito honestas; surpreendentemente simples, mas que pintam o Brasil de um jeito que nos faz falta em suas representações tradicionais em outras mídias, afastado de pré-conceitos, bairrismos ou clichês enraizados, tudo muito singelo e bem-feito. Ponto pro Toulmé.

No entanto, eu que me derramei em lágrimas pelo modo que o autismo foi abordado em Flores para Algernon, por exemplo, não consegui sentir nada parecido nessa história. O Toulmé não deixa que você sinta nas ''entrelinhas'', a jornada até o fim é bela, mas já está enraizada desde o início a redenção do pai, perde-se potência; e ao todo faz pouco, ao menos para mim, além de entreter e ensinar sobre a Síndrome de Down de modo mais intimo e pessoal.

E lembrando, a história, a autobiografia, é muito bela, uma bonita história de amor e uma homenagem de um pai para sua filha, meu problema é com o jeito que o Toulmé resolveu construir e encadear a história e as cenas; digo isto pois tem gente que supõe que desgostar de uma biografia/autobiografia é desgostar da vida da pessoa, e isso está longe de ser o caso.

É uma missão difícil falar de histórias desse tipo, principalmente as que você desgosta, mas espero que tenha me feito entender, e quais são os pontos que truncaram e atrapalharam minha leitura. Em conclusão, acho que esse é um quadrinho onde ler resenhas e reviews pouco importa, você deve lê-lo e experimentá-lo por si mesmo, dado todo o contexto. Portanto, vá fundo.… (altro)
