Papa, vrouw Sonja, hun zoon , de jongen, en een baby : tocht door Europa naar Tsjechië. In Tsjechië moeten gebruik maken van veel hulp door anderen... Nu wordt het sociaal overleven, erdoor spartelen want ze trekken nu door het meest marginale deel van het land. In het boek spreekt men van het 'wilde Oosten'. Voortdurend ellende, géén onderdak, tussen de 'maffia', vele personages volgegoten met alcohol, prostituees en vele moorden; steeds slecht weer. Onwaarschijnlijk véél avonturen, waarbij een oude russische tank uit een rivier wordt getakeld en wordt gerestaureerd voor de eerbetuiging van een oude bende-leider (vader) . Maar deze wordt ook net gedood.....
Ruwe wereld, veel ondergronds, veel banditisme.... maar elkeen binnen zijn groep is gevoelig voor de zijnen : cfr de titel.
Er gebeurt zovéél in het boek: zoveel personages ( waar de relaties pas later gekend worden), een aaneenschakeling van zovéél ernstige feiten bij het steeds maar non-stop vluchten en dit op een toch korte periode, dat de verhaallijn bij de niet-aandachtige lezer ontspoort. Inderdaad: de verloederde, ontwrichte en haast onmenselijke wereld van het letterlijke wilde Oosten! Moet herlezen worden met notities.....… (altro)

I purchased this book in the English language section of a bookstore in Prague a few years ago and just got around to reading it. This is story of a young (preteen?) Czech orphan who gets caught up in the Prague Spring and subsequent Soviet invasion. He has many adventures, some quite unbelievable, but eventually becomes somewhat jaded even at his young age.

Ilya, the main character and narrator, is young and this is captured well by the narrative voice. You can really imagine a kid telling these tales. It seems many of the adventures are embellished or perhaps misunderstood by his child-like mind. But Ilya grows up fast during the war and his naïveté wears off and is replaced by cynicism. I enjoyed learning more about the history of that time and place and ending was fantastic. The whole book didn't quite grab me, until pretty late in though. Good read.… (altro)

I'm not sure what to think of this book. It's raw and graphic but a little bit of heart slowly starts to emerge near the end, when FINALLY, one of the characters starts to seem likable, maybe even redeemable. Angel Station is the story of a the inhabitants of a grungy neighborhood in Prague, early 1990s. The stories vaguely interleave and each piece of doled out in random order (not chronological) so the overall feel is surreal and disorienting, likely intentionally, to emphasize the drug-ridden lifestyle of the characters. It's hard to say I "liked" this book, but I will probably remember it for a long time.… (altro)
