Frances Toor (1890–1956)

This quirky, out-of-print Spanish phrase book from 1941 may be more an accidental work of art than a text book. The translations are accurate (and some still relevant) but the most of the topics are dated in an unintentionally humorous way.

Some noted examples: Cuban music is very gay and sensuous. (La música cubana es muy alegre y sensual.) You never can tell what a drunkard may do. (Nunca se puede saber lo que hará un borracho.) What a happy combination of girl and hat. (Qué feliz combinación de sombrero y muchacha.) So am I but you are more jealous than a Turk. (Yo también, pero eres más celoso que un turco.)… (altro)
