Max Favour is a young man who has been there, done that. In The Great War he was espionage, now he is a DCI with The Yard and a motorcar racer. The publisher had me at the blurb, but there's lots more to the story! Fast and VERY interesting historical procedural. Loved it!

Chicago 1886, just a few days after an explosion haskilled and maimed some policemen Sergeant Doran gets a new partner - rookie Detective Diamond. They are sent to investigate a suspicious death, not realising the havoc that will follow.
An enjoyable story, and a good solid start to the series, with some likeable characters.

For such a short story it seemed almost to have too many threads to the plot and too many characters to keep track of.

Billy Doran is an officer in the CPD working out of Station House Number Two. Recent days have been difficult due to the Haymarket bombing. There were many wounded and losses for the force that day, the most personal for Doran, the loss of his best friend, a widower with a young son. To lose a best friend and then be assigned a rookie from another station house makes work even harder. There's no peace at home either, as Doran's a widower himself with 5 daughters. His oldest daughter, Bridie, does everything she can to fill her mother's shoes. He thought he'd already experienced his worst days, but then he came home one evening, and Bridie told him Sorcha, one of the twins, was missing.
The push and pull of a new partnership, Doran and Arthur Diamond, draws the reader in amid the aftermath of a brutal murder, a theft at the local stockyards, corruption and graft, the local flavor of the brand-new department store of Marshall Fields, and the history of a worker's movement fighting for an 8-hour workday are tightly woven for a compelling historical mystery.
I look forward to reading more of this series.… (altro)
