David Thurlow

I understand that there’s a format to book reviews, you write a description, you share your opinions, if you’re really weird or immature, maybe throw in a gif of someone crying.. But that’s never made sense to me because there’s a description right up there *points* already on the page for you to read and gifs are terribly distracting. Something else that doesn’t make sense to me is picking up this book and then putting it down again before having read every single word. I took a chance on this novel and became the kid under the blanket with a flashlight. Or I would have been, had I not been using an e-reader with a built in light.. The point still stands. I picked this up expecting to read the first chapter, just to get started, see if the writing suited me then several hours later, was surprised and delighted to find that I had devoured the whole thing. It went down easy and I can already tell that this is a story that’s going to be popping into my mind of its own accord in the future.

The writing suited me, the story entertained, I found all of the characters relatable, and the relationships authentic. There were a couple of characters that I wasn’t fond of but the author managed to illicit my sympathy for them, I felt like I got where they were coming from and I genuinely felt rude for throwing them shade.

Some things that I did not feel: I did not feel led around by the nose, I did not feel disappointed, I did not feel like I spent any time at all picking apart the plot. It was all around really enjoyable.

I hope to have a paper copy of this on my shelf soon and I already have a couple of select friends in mind that to loan it to. I also hope to see Mr. Thurlow showing up on my ‘new books by authors you’ve read’ goodreads page, which is.. My most favorite place on the internet.
