Battle for Cilicia
Star Legions Book 1
By: Michael G. Thomas
Narrated by: Ian Gordon
Series: Star Legions, Book 1
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. This book has plenty of battle action, political suspense, and intrigue. The story plot and characters were ok. I know a lot of people like the style of writing this author uses but it just wasn't for me. I found it a cross between a news article of a battle and fiction. I am not saying it's bad, some like the military type feel but not me. I love space opera but like the snarky comments and ship falling apart, scruffy crew with the love/ hate relationship. This book is too nice and tidy. 😁 ( Except the bar scene, I liked that! More of that!)… (altro)

Warrior King, the first book of the Star Legions: The Terran Wars series, is a stand alone continuation of the Ten Thousand series that has strategic space opera elements as well as bouts of ground based battles that utilize military tactics reminiscent of those of Ancient Greece. I came to think of Star Legions as an interesting projection of Ancient Greece and Persian cultures onto a galactic scale with technology that allows for futuristic laser weapons to be countered by futuristic armor, spears, swords and shields like before the age of gunpowder warfare. This added a lot to the various battles in terms of the importance of tactics used and how battles unfolded. Overall, it's a unique take on possible galactic cultures with interesting battles but it could have done with more character development to get the reader invested more in the primary characters.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This book is part of a universe of books written by the same author and does a great job of starting a series of books without prior knowledge of the other books. The book starts at a fast pace as prospective civilian and military cadet fighter pilots compete for the opportunity to take part in a distinguished tournament training program. Unknown to the winners is that their training will go from simulation to the real thing faster than they expect. The stakes only increase for the cadets as the stability of peace shatters around them and they must push their training to keep themselves and those around them alive in an effort to make it home. As a fan of science fiction books I found this book to be quite satisfying from the space combat scenes to the universe the books takes place in.

I could not even finish the first in the trilogy. It is a blow by blow description of a military action. Characters are one dimensional. Plot is thin. Full of poor grammar.
