This is one of those books where I was not fond of the writing style, yet the content was solid enough to round my review up instead of down.

This book looks at mindfulness from the perspective of a tool to help one be a better leader, Part One covers how mindfulness changes the brain and the benefits of those changes. One thing I appreciated was the side bars by coauthor Tim Gard which discuss the neurology of mindfulness. This is an area that has developed rapidly in recent years and so, while I did not retain all the details, I appreciated the update.

Part Two discusses mindfulness practices. It discusses different ways of meditating and different ways of incorporating mindfulness practices. The last couple chapters get into some of the deeper changes that can come from mindfulness practice and talks about some of the changes in attitude that mindfulness practice can bring that might not fit so well in the leadership focused benefits covered in Part One.

I appreciated that in both parts, Matt Tenney really meant mindfulness, not just mindfulness as a less scary sounding word for meditation. The book covers both sitting meditation practice as well as ways to and benefits of integrating mindfulness in everyday activities. It is this second set of activities -- which, it is true, builds on the foundation of more formal meditation practice -- which really gives benefits in day to day life.

What lowered the rating of this book for me is that both Part One and Part Two felt like they belabored the point. I feel like Part One could have been 2-3 chapters instead of 6. Part Two felt more appropriate to the amount of content but still could have been made a few chapters more concise.

Overall though, it is worth reading. I actually felt that the book taught me a bit more than Search Inside Yourself. This combines the advantages of SIY with some of what I appreciated from Sam Harris's Waking Up (without what some would consider the taint of being written by a prominent and controversial atheist). In the end though, I rated all three of these 3 stars, so there is not that much distance between them.

Tenney and Gard have provided a practical guide for mindfulness self-training. They show how to develop greater self-awareness without having to carve out time from a busy schedule to add mindfulness exercises. The authors explain how mindfulness can be developed as you go about your normal day. Interspersed throughout the book and separated from the main text are notes explaining the neuroscience of mindfulness training. Clear instructions are given for mindfulness practices for beginners to advanced-level practitioners. The authors explain how mindfulness improves leadership and personal excellence. This is the book for those wanting to understand the importance of mindfulness to personal and professional effectiveness and how to cultivate increased awareness of self, others, and one’s surroundings without complicated exercises. The authors admit that their approach is simple but not necessarily easy. But for those who truly want to increase mindfulness, "The Mindfulness Edge" provides a realistic process for achieving that goal.… (altro)
