Sull'Autore

Jack Sweetman taught history at the U.S. Naval Academy for twenty years. A graduate of Stetson University, he served as a company commander in the U.S. Army and was later a Ford Fellow at Emory University, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1973. He is the author, editor, or translator of numerous Naval mostra altro Institute Press books and currently serves as series editor for the press's Classics of Naval Literature collection and as consulting editor for Naval History magazine. A recipient of the U.S. Navy League's Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement, the Naval History Author of the Year Award, and the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award, Dr. Sweetman was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2000. A solid set of mini-bios about some of the greatest admirals in 'modern' history. Because there are so many of them, they are short. They are also making no attempt to break new ground or produce new information, there are substantial lists of further reading for every admiral included. Most interesting to me were the 'surveys', that chronicled the development of technology from 'The Ship and the Gun' to 'Air Sea Warfare'. Included are Drake, De Ruyter, Nelson, Jellicoe, Togo, etc, a good multi-national representation.… (altro)
