(altro)

I remember seeing Page 3 Murder’s numerous times in numerous books stores online & on floor but the price of the book always deterred me. Its is penned by Kalpana Swaminathan. With Page 3 murder she has started a series of murder mystery & they are primarily called “A Lalli Mystery”. Lalli is a retired police officer but still the last resort of police man in solving a murder. The Gardner’s song is a book in the same series. This novel is set around Utkursha   the building where Lalli resides with her niece who, by the way is assisting some writer and is the Sutradhar of this book. The mystery is set in the small building and kicks start with the death of Mr. Rao who considered himself the messiah of the building & its people. He always considered moral policing of the inmates of the building as his birth right. But what is moral policing for him is nosiness for others. Mr. Rao has been instrumental in breaking homes, spreading false rumors about almost all his building people not sparing his own nephew too. Post the murder, the Lalli’s niece relives all that has happened in the building for the past two months. She traces the incidents which have happned with people residing there and  very easily concludes that of the sixteen families residing in Utkursha (Including Mr. Rao’s)  fifteen would not only be happy with his death but they all had a reason to murder Mr. Rao. The suspects included herself & Vaibhav (Mr. Rao’ son). The complete 220 odd pages are about solving this mystery. ::: What I Liked about the Book ::: ** My first impression was it’s an Endearing Mystery. Author uses simple words and has added enough amounts of satire & humour to make a mystery novel interesting. Take this for example: One of the neighbor remarks ‘He was very proud of the fact he never touched a drop of alcohol all his life. “I’m a teetotaler”, he used to boast,’ and now his insides will be swimming in alcohol’. (I know there are some spikes who would love imagining this). **There are several characters & related stories in the book but all the stories are not only handled very well but have proper ending too. The characters range from all the families residing to two Dutch girls too. The best part is that all the characters are instrumental and have something to do in the book, they are not there for the sake of it.** The narrative is quite simple & the book is a very easy read. Without the help of any major thrills and chills the book keeps you glued, as the case should be with a Who Dun it novel. ** The story has an old world charm to it. It reminds you of “Byomkesh Bakshi” which used to come on DD & the case were solved in an unassuming and simple manner. ::: Where I disagreed with the Book :::Well here comes the disappointment, I didn’t like the end. For me the best mystery novel is the one where you’ve laid all the cards and still I am not able to guess who the murderer is, springing up of surprises at the end are not allowed. And I think when the author disclosed the real murderer she knew that the question which will spring up “Was the motive strong enough for a murder?” She answers it with “Interestingly, if there’s one thing I’ve learned to identify as criminal intent, it’s the inability to see beyond the compulsion of the act. Beyond doesn’t just mean ahead, it also means around. Crime happens where there are no options left”. After reading this line I forgot all the logic and enjoyed finishing the book. ::: Why to read this Book :::Well all the pluses are good enough reasons to read it. Besides those I think, it’s after a long time that I have read a decent mystery novel by any contemporary Indian author, otherwise all of them are busy writing either about College days or Indian settled abroad or Chic lit. This book should be read by those who love mystery novels without the blood & gore, who love to read mind games and like simple mysteries. Though I do have a question for the author...What was the Niece’s name....she anchors the book but no where her name is mentioned.… (altro)
